Do NTs stim? Are the following stimming? No? Why?

1. Uncontrollably attacking someone you're in a position of power over because you can't blow up at your boss and desperately need to let out steam.

2. Automatic spurting of lies without thinking of the consequences, to look good to others.

3. Irrepressible talking nonsense for hours, bad-mouthing another race, mocking others less fortunate when feeling anxious and in need of acceptance by the group.

4. Unable to restrain laughter when boss tells a joke.

Small talk is their form of stimming.

I'm going to try and find a paper written about NT stims and AS stims. It was a very good comparison and it basically stated that BOTH stim, except of course, the NTs find their stims "acceptable" and they did NOT find the "AS" stims as "socially acceptable."

As soon as I find it, I'll post it here...

But doctors call their meaningless chatter socializing, while they call our rocking stimming. We will be discriminated upon while NTs are the ones writing the diagnoses.

Seriously though: NTs do stim to a lesser extent.

Simulating Stims topic?

Egad, Greentea. I do not know if these behaviours are NT stims but they sure are NegaTive. 8O

Sounds like all of these stims are practiced in order to enable the NT to relieve stress, or project it onto someone else. At least our stims do not do this to NTs! :o

By the way, it seems most papers she has written are on deaf/blind children, etc...however, it is also true that many with autism have some type of issue with hearing/eyesight...so there's probably a huge correlation here.

Ah yes, I read about "perfect pitch" and how many of the children with perfect pitch had autism/eyesight issues...

Very interesting read, thank you. Though she advocates teaching your child to look more normal. so it's not really evolutionary.

I would say not, but I'm no expert. Here's why:

Greentea wrote:

This just sounds like what it is; someone who is behaving badly because they are pretty sure that they will get away with it.

Greentea wrote:

I have actually done this, when overstimulated and nervous, but not necessarily to look good. I had simply lost the ability to judge, and hadn't the insight to retreat. IMO, when NT's do this, they really don't think beyond the moment, and may be nervous as well. I had an NT co-worker who did this consistently. I never understood why she told so many lies.

Greentea wrote:

I have never understood this. When I found myself in a conversation that had deteriorated to this, it was hard to withdraw, for fear of reprisal from said group.

Greentea wrote:

Again, this, to me, is sheer nerves. But I'm beginning to suspect that laughing is a stim for both NTs and those on the spectrum.

Greentea...sadly, if they didn't advocate for change, they wouldn't have a job...so, guess what? That's what they'll do. I do think it's ridiculous as well, but remember, as an NT, they are more concerned with going with the flow, getting rich, being like everyone else...than they are with justice...

Not for everyone. Being neurotypical doesn't automatically mean you're extroverted.

I'm an NT, and I "stim" as you may say, if I'm angry, eager, or frusterated, I tend to restrict and loosen the muscles in my neck, and I also pace, mainly due to impatience.

Those are brought on by something, but I "stim" normally all the time, as I have Tourette's syndrome.

I agree. I'm introverted, but NT. My son (HFA) talks my ear off. It's a one-sided conversation where he tells me everything about a video game he's playing or the plot of a movie he watched recently. It's hard for me to pay attention because he's not interested in any input.

I didn't know that was stimming. I know they doodle, some like to play with their ring on their finger by pulling it up and down their finger, my shrink taps her fingers together. Everyone stims.

Exactly. My friend with AS has more friends than I do (and it's only him).
