I think yes they probably should be legalised but it would be naive to suggest that it would put an end to gangsters and their activeties because they are already involved in prostitution, extortion, money laundering etc so they would just reinforce themselves in the areas they are already involved in. Dont forget that ciggarettes and alcohol are legal here but because of the price we have to pay for them criminals are already making fortunes in bringing in fags and booze.

Some drugs I would not want to legalaize even considering all the principles here; however for the reasons you listed I am very much for the legalization of marijuana in the US. I think it would become HARDER to get. I am against the USE of maijuana, actually, but still think it should be legalized. One thing you forgot to mention, I think (unless I missed it): We could tax the drug money if it was legal!

How about its illegal to force others to take drugs.
Or use them with malicious intent (AKA GHB)

I break with my friends on the Left here, and think that drugs SHOULD NOT be legalised. But don't worry, it is not for any of the reasons that the raving republicans give.

First up, I want to say that POSSESSION of drugs should be decriminalised. This is to follow up Ante's point of addicts seeking help. If it is not illegal to carry small quantities of drug for personal use, addicts will be more likely to seek help.

However, DEALING in drugs should continue to be illegal, and prison sentences should be doubled for drug dealers, carrying over a certain quantity of the drug i.e. enough to sell to lots of people and make a good profit.

Comrades, as with all industry, both legal and illegal, there is some fat bastard at the top raking it in while the poor addicts are enticed into drug taking, often caused by personal problems or problems fitting in with our ugly capitalist society. It is these profit makers that I want to catch.

The problem with making all drugs legal for dealing is that corporations will develop that will profit legally from other peoples misery, just like these tobacco firms. They will advertise their products in shops, in full view of young kids. Could be scary..........

I have never seen a drug in my entire life, but if available on the High Street, it is ever more visible, and people like me could have easily been tempted.

A last note, drugs are DANGEROUS. Some can cause death. It is not something I think should be encouraged.

Here's an example of pointless nanny-state drug-law, courtesy of the Blair regime:

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/4691899.stm

You can pick the mushrooms in question about this time of year, but they're now considered a class A drug. Why? What harm does it do? OK, you may poison yourself, but that's your problem not that of the state.

Like I've said before, politicians have got one huge problem with priorities; they're too bloody busy feathering their own nests by furthering their careers through pandering to do-gooding moralising busy-bodies, to be taking care of really important issues.

I didn't answer the poll, but I think that Pot should be legalised and regulated in much the same way that Alcohol is. Perhaps at the same time we could make other non-opiate drugs in their natural form ( Mushrooms, Coca Leaf Tea, etc,) legal to posess as well.

On the other hand, I would like to see penalties for refining and the distribution of refined drugs (Coke, Crystal meth, etc) and Opiates made much harsher than they already are.

You posted elsewhere that you get an on-the-spot fine and a dirty look from the cops for even just one plant pot or little anount of weed. This is not full decriminalisation.

Decriminalisation means to legalise something. Here in Britain cannabis has been downgraded to a grade c drug to free the legal systems resources somewhat, which means that if you smoke it in you're own home your probably alright and if you get caught with a little on the streets the cops will most likely just take it off you and send you on your way without charge, it is however still a banned substance and criminalised and if you deal in it you can go down for a long time.

I think we will have to put it down to different legal systems
