I wrote this message to both of my senators tonight. Just thought I'd share since more cuts in poor peoples' benefits will surely be made in order to pay for the damage of Hurricane Katrina.

::EDIT- These are both REPUBLICAN senators. Just thought I'd add that::

Dear Senator,

Hope you're happy. Republican idiocy is winning again. Bush is dragging you all down into losing your next race. But you're not the only ones to blame. Blame the Fundamentalist Christians who voted you all in based solely on Abortion and Gay Marriage.

But in the mean time, in order to pay for New Orleans, even more cuts will be made. But will these cuts happen to the people who can AFFORD them??? The rich who have been reaping their seemingly infinite profits with these last two presidential elections??? No.

Cuts will be made to the poor's health care, to student financial aid, and any other break a poor person can get!

Conservatives who believe in "God"? Such hypocrites. War in Iraq for Democracy? Riiiiiiight. OIL you mean. So the oil companies will keep making money and paying it into the hands of the politicians. MURDER of soldiers and Iraqis. Bringing "Democracy" to Iraq is just so Bush can have a righteous reason to say why he's there. But we want the OIL. If it were "righteous", why weren't we in Zimbabwe fighting against Operation Murambatsvina and the mass eviction and desecration of human rights?? Why did I see NO news clips on US television other than a minor blip at the end of a program or two?? Answer: no oil.

And Democracy works? Well, we certainly aren't proving that one right. So we're bringing it into Iraq!

Is it any WONDER we're criticized and laughed at by the entire world? The symbol of greed of the conglomerate. A country where the 10% rich rule. Hmmm, just like France before their revolution and all the aristocracy were hung out to dry (to put it nicely).

I am ASHAMED to call myself an American. And never before have I thought this until these last two races.

And spouting that Social Security is in danger when only a slight adjustment needs to be made in 2017-- and the same thing happened during one of Reagan's terms. But then again, what are we to expect? I mean, we want to privatize ALL the insurance we can so that the HUGE insurance companies can make even MORE money!

So go kiss your babies and promise the Fundamentalist Christians you're doing God's will. And if you are a Xtian, yourself, I hope you feel ashamed. Because after supporting all this, you're gonna have to be working your a** off to get into heaven.

Well, have fun with the rest of your term, because I'M gonna be having fun at the polls helping to vote you out of office.
:D

I agree 100% with what the letter said, but I'm not sure if personal attacks of this nature are going to get you anywhere.

It was not quite as rational as I would have liked it to be. But then again, I am just so furious that "rational" on this particular subject is a bit out of my reach at the moment. :? To be honest, I just felt like ranting and I think I've achieved that.

I only have two points of contention:
1) There's no public health care to take money away from.
2) I'm not sure how Christianity became associated with Plutocracy. Just because most Christian fundamentalists want to provide for their famlies needs without government assistance regardless of their income does not mean they want to see the haves exploit the have nots.

Personally, I would favor a politician with extremely conservative social policies and moderate libreral economic policies. Quite frankly, the Democrats are usually better at economics, with the excepion of all that globalization crap they are into.

It's obviously NOT a war for oil. For reference see: CURRENT GAS PRICES.

We still BUY oil from OPEC nations, and the prices have never been higer.

Here's what's really happening: We are using our soldiers as targets, to keep the terrorist preoccupied. They are utilitarian, thus will attack us in the most convinient way. If we have troops "over there" then that is where the terrorists will focus their efforts . . . rather than on our soil.

Um, hi! Healthcare cuts? I'm one of them. Medicaid? Medicare? Ring any bells???

If these weren't cut then I'd like to know where my insurance went!

Anyone falling at or below the poverty level is eligible for health insurance.

While in the meantime, we can deplete our own National Guard enough that in times of a natural disaster (like Katrina) we can prove to the terrorists that our Home Security is useless.

Sadam never had long range weapons. Sadam wasn't responsible for 9/11. Now what was that guy's name who was?... I can't seem to remember. Haven't heard of him for a long time. Gee...

Iraq, not to mention, won Bush the re-election. So, true. It wasn't oil. It was re-election and oil.

I agree with writing letters to our elected officals. As a matter of fact, I belong to a grassroots organization that sends its member upcoming legisration and bullet points on it so its easy to understand and draft letters. Here is a few points from people who organize this type of thing.

1) Letters matter. Or phone calls or e-mails. When contacted, a congressional aid said that as few as six contacts on any matter is considered significant as most people don't bother to write.

2) Letters aren't read by the elected offical but by staff. They summarize the letters and report to the offical. That is why it is helpful to keep letters to one piece of legistration or one topic...makes it easier for the staffer. And you want it easy because if its not, your letter will not be read.

3) A calm letter with support for your option is noted. A rant might be recorded but will not get the same consideration. Even if the topic is worth ranting about.

4) A personalize letter holds more wieght than a standard postcard or letter sent by members on one organization but the postcard is better than nothing.

I think that really good letters should also be sent to local papers as a possible letter to the editor or editorial piece.

Um, we didn't steal any oil, so this isn't a war for oil. And I didn't say that Sadam had any long range weapons. He wasn't the terrorist, he was our target to focus our enemy's concentration on a location outside of the US.

And, I'm not arguing about the uselessness of our Homeland Security. If it had been a large-scale terrorist attack, our responce would have been equally pathetic.

FYI . . . I'm NOT a Bush supporter. I just hate when people use the catch-phrase "War for Oil" when that is so far from the truth.

I have a feeling that those republican senators will die laughing after reading your letter. I agree with almost everything in it, but it comes off as being more of a screed or a standard issue democratic war cry. Many conservatives find these sorts of things really, really funny.

Quote:
Dear Senator,

Hope you're happy. Republican idiocy is winning again. Bush is dragging you all down into losing your next race. But you're not the only ones to blame. Blame the Fundamentalist Christians who voted you all in based solely on Abortion and Gay Marriage.

First you directly insult the insituation (GOP) that they have affliated themselves with for their entire lives, then you have also insulted the consituents that have probably put them in office, and finally, compeltely alienated yourself by suggesting that their consistuents only care about Abortion and Gay marriage. Although not all senators genuinely care about their supporters, enough do that if they actually read the first paragraph, would not read anything else.

I have to question what your goal is:

a. To establish a dialog to end this madness with the more moderate republicains,

or

b. To simply piss in the face of a senator and further alienate him from the more moderate democrats..

[/quote]

Many economic researchers believe big, industrial nations like China are beginning to put a strain on oil demand, resulting in higher prices for us. Plus with Katrina demolishing the oil derricks out in the water, gas prices are guaranteed to be high for awhile.

I had no intention of writing a compelling letter. If I had, I would have spent actual time on it.

I doubt this message will ever get past the senators' clerks and interns. Politicians don't have the time to read rants, but their assistants might mark it down as outrage against certain policy decisions.
