There's never anything wrong with using vanishing points. If you're not using them, you're drawing something that isn't even possible, which is okay if you're not really concerned about that. But most people just do it wrong. If you do decide to use them, here are some tips:
- Everything doesn't have to go to the same vanishing point. If part of your mech is turned, it's vanishing point will be in a different place. So don't try to force it, because then it just stands there and looks dumb.
- Don't put the vanishing point too close to the subject because it'll distort the image a lot (unless that's what you want). Try roughing in some shapes in a way that looks natural and then use that to project where your vanishing points should be.
And of course there are no rules, only exceptions. But it's reasonable to say that vanishing points aren't really necessary.
