For over a decade I swore how much I hated computers and never wanted one.

Then it got to be where you simply can't get the things you need to do done without it.

Then the library was overrun by kids and I could never get online. Not even to check out a book as the card catolog is online now.

So six monthes ago I bought a computer.

Then about a month ago I had a back flare up and started surfing the web for fun . Now I'm hooked. I don't sculpt or draw anymore.

How do I get unhooked?

Usually I go cold turkey. I cant do that with the computer because If it werent for the "little Devil box" I wouldnt be involved and communicating with the local arts community. As well as the AS community. I won't accept" everyone does it." If i did that I would still be a shoplifting , chainsmoking, overweight, pot head- drunk.

You all have probably have more experience with this. How do I discipline myself? My library books sre sitting on the coffe table unread and overdue. Why is the net so addictive.

Please help.

-Dave

I have a tight deadline at work and I'm on here reading your post.

I don't think I'm in any position to give you advice.

I doubt Satan is ever truely happy...

But that is beside the point, and unhelpful to you.

Have you tried setting time tables? You know, like only being online for so and so long time? Or only at specific times of day?
I don't know if it will work. Like you I have always quit cold turkey when I felt that something was disrupting my life.

If all else fails you could go find the 2Girls1cup video... if that doesn't make the internet look less apealing to you then nothing will (If you don't know what the video is, then for the love of all that is dear to you do not attempt to find out. Trust me on that one!)

Satan encourages pleasing self with anything that is wanted, and not to avoid it,it's one of the statements of satanism.

The internet is nothing bad, there's a lot to gain from it,if really do want to get away from it,need to reduce time spent on it each day gradually, get someone else to do it if not possible to do self, doing complete stopping of it,will only make it worse, because will want it even more, and make sure have distractions for when come off internet.
One of the things am do when at family home at the weekend,is have rules on dads' pc-he comes in and reminds am-finish at next message,it's a lot easier to cope with,if have rules,so it's predictible and know there is an end coming up.

I think computors are addictive as they work as supernormal stimuli to the human brain. ( super normal stimuli are things that are bigger and brighter than there natural counterpart such as cookoos eggs and stickleback fish attacking red card on sticks). I think because we have no defence built up for it, we are vulnerable to its lures- the same thing happens with cars, they are dangerous yet we love them and even obsess with them- yet if we saw great white sharks swimming down the street we would all be terrified, when in fact sharks are much safer than cars but we have not evolved to fear cars or avoid spending hours on the computor.

In this century, computers are taking the need to write or read anything by hard-copy. Computer addiction is expected. Theres so much more you can learn online than by reading.....You have faster access to so many more things. Thats what makes it so addicting.

I can't offer any advise sorry, I am looking for the same thing as you...a way to espace the addiction!

I believe that things could be much worse. . .
My computer is a sanctuary and a means of communicating.
Basically I would be on the verge of non verbal in real life, my computer is enabling and allows me to express thoughts and feelings. So it's probably quite healthy for me .
It's my off line life I worry about.

I've had my only puff of Pot, and my first experience with the Internet, within a year. I'm thankful that it's the Internet that I became addicted to, and not the Pot. I was craving the green stuff for a while, though.

I notice TrueDave hasn't posted much this week. Could it be he has broken the addiction? I totally agree with him there were so many other things I used to do till I got a computer. I wonder if there is a 12 step program for internet addiction? Oh I shouldn't have said that; there probably is. 8O

Now everyone STEP AWAY from the computer.

I am pretty much the other way around. I use the computer to research things I might want to do. And it has worked.
