I've seen a lot other Aspies have same problem I do. I have to force myself to take showers, I wear the same clothes a lot, and I don't care what I look like as far as how my hair ect looks.

I'm sure people think I'm a slob or a bum, or just lazy. But just hard for me to care about this kind of stuff.

Wouldn't that be executive dysfunction?

And it says in the criteria they don't lack self help skills but lot of aspies don't take very good care of themselves. That isn't very good self help skills. The DSM criteria is crap I'd say.

Actually, I'm a neat freak who checks his appearance several times a day precisely because I know I'll turn into a slob if I don't pay attention. Interestingly, I never cared about my appearance when I was younger - I just assumed I had such a scintillating personality that people would see beyond my appearance. And to be fair, scruffiness looks cuter in a fourteen-year-old than a forty-year-old.

Interesting this.

Pre dx, my clothing was a reflection on my desperate desire to run with the world.

Post Dx, I have not got out of the same pair of jeans and fleese for 7 months now...........As I write this these very jeans and fleese are spinning in the washer, God knows what shape they will come out in when I take them out. No doubt they will fall apart, if so, I shall go back to the same shop I got them and ask for seconds.

I am not the most fashionable person in the world. But I clean myself, and deodorise.

As far as the looking like... I just don't see the point. I don't see my clothes as a reflection of my person. The only time I "make an effort" is for my dancing attire. I wear fashionable clothes to dancing... (vintage or swing clothes.)

Generally mismatching dorky attire is the same to me as a two thousand dollar Armani suit and wanky hair.

Because it's not important: it's a silly part of social interaction that popular culture has taken far beyond what it should be. I say we should all go back to wearing the skins of whatever animal the men have brought home for dinner (j/k).

But seriously, anything above basic hygiene and making sure you don't smell, is part of the whole social interaction thing. And very, very annoying.

As for staying clean... I don't know why aspies find it difficult. Maybe it's a matter of making it part of a routine? I never really had a problem with it as long as I made sure that I had a routine for it.

yeah Purplefluffychainsaw,

My hygiene and cleanliness routine is on my routine lists (I have lists posted for myself around my house) so I find it practically impossible to be unclean now.

Apparently my girlfriend has been subtly hinting that she'd like me to shower every day for the entire 3 1/2 years we've been together. And being an aspie (but neither of us realised this until very recently) I completely failed to notice she was hinting at all. And then recently she actually came out and said it explicitly, and now I do shower every day. I do find it slightly funny that she thought I was ignoring her hints, and I just didn't realise that she'd made any.

I don't care about fashion though. The only time I cared about it ws when I was obsessed with 1960s style - and then I only cared about 1960s fashion, not current fashion. Hell, if it were up to me I'd wear pyjamas 100% of the time.

Appearances can be misleading sometimes topic

I have always thought it was a question of priorities and balance. What is more important, or necessary. I always appear to others to be dishevelled and eccentric because of my clothing style. I wear what I like. I used to try to iron my pants before I had a trumble dryer, to make them softer. Who even has time for that now?

When a woman gets older, in her fifties, clothes do not fit as well anyway as they did during the childbearing years. Arthritis can make dressing less pleasant. Now I know what physically challenged people encounter when donning their duds for the day. It can be slow and even painful. :x

My Punked up hair and non-mainstream clothes are a part of the person that I truly am. If people don't like how I dress, they don't have to look at me.

I used to have that problem, but as I've gotten into the habit of doing those things I don't feel comfortable when I forget to do them.

I have naturally curly hair, and was made fun of when I was younger, it was so hard to take care of..Today, with flat irons, it takes me 45 minutes, a long time for me, but I do it beacuse it changes the texture and looks nice..I think it is important for me to look nice, not flashy or high-maintenance, just nice...I love great-smelling shampoos and soaps....I love to do laundry and prefer freshness....

I wonder if anyone else is the same as me.

Most of the time, I do not care about my appearance. I wear no make up to work and don't style my hair. Although I'm definately clean and don't smell, it might take you a little while to work out if I was a boy or a girl.

However, if its one of my rare outings - I have a gig to go to! - I love dressing up! In fact I would say I actually have pretty good dress sense.

The report on me that my psychologist wrote says I am 'smartly dressed'. I think I wore brogues to the appointment.

My work has a strict dress code so I look nice during the week. On the weekends I look like a homeless person. My wife makes me shower and dress properly or she won't let me go anywhere with her.
