I'm 26 years old. I'm a doctor. I have Asperger's. I suppose that's the best place to begin. Life has been tough, though not unmanagable. I have a beautiful new wife. She's as normal as any woman I might find, I guess. She's a psychotherapist though. She's the one who recognized it. Once I began to do research on my own, I realized the obviousness of the truth. It seemed like the unifying theory of what's been wrong with me this whole time was laid out before my eyes. My story is not uncommon: complete social awkwardness; inappropriate conversations, precocious vocabulary, talking about strange little obsessions meanwhile people's eyes were rolling back into their heads. It was very difficult to make friends. In fact I had only one friend in high school. I lived with a lot of depression. I felt like I had been born totally outcast, and I had no idea why. My only saving grace is an abnormal ability to mimic anything: sounds, actions, expressions, faces. So to adapt, to survive, I cobbled together a personality, something that normal people find more palatable. My brother is something of a social genius. Watching him interact gave me my only defense as a child. I remember being at a party interacting with someone who was enjoying themselves and thinking they aren't responding to me, they're responding to my brother. So strange. I have to say, and it's taken a long time to be able to say this, that I truly like who I am. My life is wonderful and I count myself blessed. I know that part of those blessings, a very large part, come from my quite neuroatypical brain. I'm glad I found the right place.

-B.

Welcome to WP!

it's that big 'aha!' moment that knocked my socks off! I always thought that when I died I would have a little chat with God and find out what was going on. Who knew that at 56 I would get the message with out expiring in the process!

Glad to have you here. It's like that scene from "Close Encounters of the Third Kind" where we all walk out of the mothership. . .

Hello DoctorAspie and welcome to WrongPlanet.

I have worked with a couple of Doctor Aspies before (I'm a physiotherapist).

I am married to an Aspie and 2 of my 3 sons have been diagnosed with Asperger's.

What type of medicine do you practice?

Helen

It's just nice on some basic human Maslow's way that I belong somewhere and I have something fundamentally in common with other human beings. Right now I'm a surgery resident right now, but I move onto radiology next. I find it ironic that I'm going to be a radiologist. I personally think it will employ my more esoteric mental abilities thanks to my neuroatypia. The thing that I really enjoy though is people and social situations. I'm actually incredibly socially active. Mostly thanks to my neuroatypia again. Thanks for the support, guys. I really appreciate it.

Dr. B.

I'm 27, considered neurotypical. I'm always perplexed at the lack of diagnostic standard used by some "professionals" when working with ADHD, ASD etc.

My background is in electronics and computers. I sometimes record EEGs, because I'm the only one who can get the computer working. I'm considering going to medical school, and a few professors have suggested that I go for it. Some of my favorite TV shows was Chicago Hope, ER and now House.

Anyway, Welcome to WP

Hi DoctorAspie,

I have this problem with my foot...it's painful in one place...and blue...and...

I'm just kidding!...Sorry, I've been waiting for a doctor with aspergers to introduce themselves here for a long time just so I could say something like that haha.

Well now that you know why you are the way you are, it's good that you seek to meet others like yourself. I know that professionals in the medical field are often hesitant to admit that they have something "different" about them...so the fact that you are here is fantastic! Your advocating that..."It's ok to admit something, no matter who you are,".

Anyway...you are very lucky to have such a caring wife, i hope that you two have a great marrige and many good years to come.
Also, I hope you enjoy posting here.
