After my parents told me that I have Asperger Syndrome I've been reading a few articles on it. When I looked at a few articles at first they were saying that people with Asperger Syndrome lack imagination. Then when I read other articles they stated that people with AS do have creativity, possibly beyond the neurotypicals. Now I'm confused whether we do or do not have creativity, so can anyone explain whether or not we have creativity and imagination?

One thing I do not lack is an imagination. On the contrary, mine's in excess.

Speak for yourself, sir. All gifts are two edged swords...you have to learn to handle them to keep from getting badly hurt. That takes time, effort and practice, like any other learned skill. Even your seeming "disadvantages" can be turned and used for your good. But you have to learn how it's done.

you know some days I wish I could trade my whole life (or many years of it) for like one day of being normal
I don't want this, and if a cure is made, no matter the risks I will take it
I have almost lived 20 years
and suffered most of them
and people saying "its gonna get better" I don't buy it
its crap to me
there are no gifts with this
it's an illness
I am defective
if I was a work animal or machine I would be destroyed
but I am forced to linger here doing nothing for anyone
 I won't die by my own hands
that's not very "honourable" to me
but I will never accept this part of me

Well, it depends on the individual. Using two extremes as an example, I'm very immersed in my imagination. I estimate that I spend over half of my waking hours in my own world. On the other hand, I've heard of aspies who don't even know how to use their imaginations.

Funny, I guess I don't fit into AS when it comes to that. I do a lot of daydreaming. I love anything that involves creativity. Usually I get my paints out and paint what comes to mind. I do a lot of journalizing and short stories. I've never been real good with mechanical or manual way of thinking. I guess I'm on the other end of that spectrum. :?

If you told any classical musicologist that Beethoven, and Satie, are some of the most creative composers to ever have walked the planet, I would bet that they would agree with you at almost any instance. A look into there lives also shows us that they probably suffered from some form of Autism. Were these people "uncreative". Does a Beethoven Symphony come from a mind that is "uncreative". Though as anything, depends on the person. Though I am on the spectrum, and got a degree in music performance..... I think a lot of people would characterize me as creative.

Am agree.
People need to not look at this and define themselves on it,only use own strength and weaknesses.
Ignore things that say Auties or Aspies 'cant' do -something- --try working at it first,no one else other than self can say Autists cannot do -something- as ASD is an individual experience.

At the NAS LFA day centre am have been to,they have Autistics' art all over the walls, they all had a lot of colours in and were not about objects, very nice.

I think it depends on your being left or right brain dominant. I'm not very creative. I hate fiction, and I don't care to talk a whole lot. My responses are short and to the point, with no desire to freely elaborate. I like direct questions, with short answers.

On the other hand there are others who can write six long paragraphs, to answer a simple question, that I would answer in only a few lines. I think those people that have the desire to communicate, are generally, very creative as well.

Of course there are exceptions, but, I think I'm mostly correct. No offense to those who like to elaborate. I wish, I were more willing to communicate, but my brain is just not wired that way. Both sides have their advantages and disadvantages. That's just reality.

I think when they talk about people with autism or AS lacking creativity, what that means gets misconstrued. I lack creativity, but not in the way you might automatically think of creativity. Where I struggle is with novel ideas. I can see something and think - wow, that's neat! But I would never be the one to come up with it. I need "scripts" for just about everything. I frequently find myself thinking, of rather simple ideas, hmm...why didn't I think of that? I do write well, for example, but not fiction material. I write about life or facts very well. I'm a concrete thinker. I look at what is, and decide what can be done with it. I'm not the person who brainstorms the new ideas.

there is no way they can measure if people with AS have creativity because different people have different gifts. I am personally very creative but I'm sure there are people who do not have that ability just like some NTS are creative and some are not.

I agree with that statement. There's as many NTs that are uncreative as well as aspies. I personally feel more on the creative side. I happen to have hobbies that need some creative thinking.
