(not sure why this would be moved to "getting to know each other". Makes no sense. People already know who I am. This seems "general" to me.

Saturday I went to my local WalMart and purchased about $100 worth of canned food (vegetables, beans, fruits, fish, etc). I scanned the section to get cans that cost around .50 cents. I couldn't believe how much food I got for $100. It was incredible. I took it home and stored them in large bins in my garage. I think this is smart for two reasons. First you never know what is going to happen in this country when it comes to energy and the economy. If something happens and the shipping trucks halt for a few days I'll have plenty of food to last me about 3 or 4 weeks. This doesn't sound as crazy as you think it sounds. It will take only a few hours for the grocery store's shelves to be empty if news came out of a gas shortage or other problems. If you have an infant I would suggest stocking up on some cheap formula too. Even if the world doesn't come to an end (lol) you'll still be able to consume the food over the next few years. Cans are good usually for about 3 to 4 years. And if inflation of the dollar continues like it has, you'll be buying food, something that will surely increase in price, that can be consumed later. The only negative thing about canned food is the sodium, but you can strain a lot of that out. Just a thought.

Don't ask me what this has to do with Asperger Syndrome. Call it an obsession I guess.

Not a bad idea. Just make sure you rotate the older cans out for newer cans before the old cans expire and you should always have a good stock.

Being prepared is never a bad idea, with the weather being so bad in some areas, we get blizzards and ice storms here in Canada, making kind of difficult to drive to the corner store. Make sure you rotate your canned food so it doesn't spoil, FIFO first in first out, that should keep you from getting food poisoning

I live in earthquake country and I keep extra water and food around.
I also have a small generator and gas.
Also a small stove with extra bottles of fuel.

In Alaska we used to have emergency items ready to throw into the car for the winter, as well as easy to prepare food, water, etc.

Doesn't matter where one lives... it doesn't take much to prepare for some sort of emergency.

Oh.... and don't forget about going to the potty. You can bucket flush most toilets that I know of, or you can have one of those portable loos ready.

my grandmother lived in the high plains of Colorado, and we would go out there and rotate her hordings of canned goods. Make sure you promptly remove any cans that are swelling.

I store enough food on my ass to last me weeks, if not a month. LOL

I think America wtith its overweight problem could use a fast.

Too bad you cannot save gasoline, as that price seems to go up weekly to where God and Bill Gates have to walk most the time now.

The high sodium will be less of a problem if you're working hard enough to sweat a lot (like most people would find themselves doing if there's no gasoline to provide energy). Ususally if you're sweating you have to take in sodium to replace that lost.

Americans are fat because we eat the wrong foods and a lot of the times we are not getting enough vitamins and minerals we need. I'm glad you mentioned water fasting because it is one of my favorite subjects. I've gone on a three week water fast before. It is very healthy and rids your body of stored up toxins. I don't recommend it for losing weight (even though you will) because long term there are more effiencent ways to do that (building up fat burning muscles). Fasting is used to not only rid your body of stored toxins but also to repair and heal parts of your body that had not been getting full attention. Your body can focus on these other parts because it doesn't have to expend so much energy in digestion everyday which takes a great deal of energy. Here is my blog on water fasting. It has been visited by over 50,000 people in the last year. Enjoy.

Cans are also useful for making things with.

Stocking up is a good idea.  However, I have three recommendations:

1. Use the oldest canned goods first, or the ones with the nearest expiration date.

2. Store the canned goods in a cooler place than a garage -- such as a basement or interior closet in your home.

3. Use the canned goods as supplements to healthier foods.

I hardly ever buy canned food. Most of my life I've had to carry my shopping home, so I've always tended to buy dried pulses and beans, and unprocessed frozen vegetables, as I didn't want to carry water I could just add myself at home. I used to buy milk powder until I switched to soya milk. I also don't like disposing of the cans because I'm supposed to clean them for recycling, and somehow that seems like forced labour so it's an unpleasant experience whether I clean them or not.

I like to know that I've got a good stock of long-life food in case of supply problems, so dried or frozen food works for me. Even so, I eat a lot of fresh food that can't be stored beyond about a week, so it's a rare day when I don't have to go and buy a bag of spinach or something.
