can we go 'paperless'?

we have the internet now. we send mails by emails. we can even send greeting cards online. we dont have to print photos anymore, we just upload them to our computers and send them electronically or keep them in a CD. we can shop online. we can order stuff online. we dont need printed calendars, we have calendars in our computers and in our cellphones.

the one thing that's hard to replace is newspaper. although some newspaper have online versions, people still like traditional newspaper.

if the whole world can go paperless (or close to it), we can save a lot of trees and help the environment.

tell that to the people who make paper for zeroxes

they often recycle paper so they dont chop down unnecessairy trees

yeah we are going that way already. In the future there will be less paper.

I wouldn't like books to go away completely. Computers are kind of awkward to take to bed with you.

I'm all for paperless.
I receive e-bills, electronic bank statement, and do not subscribe to newspapers/magazines. I read my news online or on TV.
Some ATM you can opt not to get receipts.
I also buy printer that is capable to print double-sided. It saves your printables by 50%.

What I can't live without are toilet papers and Bountry towels.

I am entirely 100% pure absolutely definetly with all of my heart AGAINST electronic voting booths. PAPER all the way. I'd prefer there's a record of my vote -making a recount possible- instead of relying on some non-open source software developed by a shady company handling the nation's votes. It's bad news just waiting to happen.

A huge portion of the world's population can't afford a computer or won't bother to buy on. I doubt the world will go paperless, and if it did, that about the increased energy consumption with millions of computers turned on? Ecologically, I don't know which isworse.

Sure, if we were to stop cutting down trees in their natural settings things would get a lot better. Their already screwed ecosystems would have a bigger chance at staying intact and adapting as best as possible.

Corporations would need to start their artificial plantations in areas already devastated by humans. Unfortunately, it's cheaper to just go to some forest and chop down existing trees to quicker and higher profits than worry about every other aspect of it.

I remember the promise of this back in 1994. Offices would go paperless.

We can't, no matter how electronic we get. Too much information dispersed on paper ...

As much as I agree that using paper a lot less would be better for the forests, I don't think it would be entirely practical. It's very easy for computers to crash, and for memory to be wiped. I think that perhaps less important things, such as sending non-business related mail and newspapers, could be sent over the internet, but important and confidential information should be kept on paper, at least until a more secure way of storing information electronically has been developed. And as Who_Am_I said, paper books are easier to read in bed than computers!

I like to scribble things on papers while reviewing them or to make small drawings. Now I have a electronic blocnote, but it is not the same.

Also reading a book from my PDA is not the same feeling as a paper book.

I love paper (except when I get a paper cut), and I think recycled paper is a reasonable compromise from an ecological standpoint. I remember the first recycled writing pad I got as a kid in the seventies, it seemed so... special to me, like ancient parchment or something.

The government is supposed to reduce paper waste, but most of my colleagues do not even double-side when they send print jobs to the printer. I often take their one-sided pieces that they throw away (do not recycle) and reuse them by choosing the manual paper tray whenever I have a single page document I have to print. More often than not, I do not even print stuff. But when I have to according to certain rules within our organization, I always reduce the amount I use and reuse and recycle everything.

Data storage is getting much better. RAM that stores info even when off will make crashes harmless for the most part, and redundant hard drives are nice. With a proper setup electronic systems can be just as safe and reliable as paper, especially as time goes on. OLEDs and the stuff that HP was working on make paper thin writing pads and entire collections of books on a sheet the size of a hardback book cover possible. Don't forget how fast technology is advancing, what is impractical today will be indispensable tomorrow.

But for the same reason, what is readable today may be unreadable tomorrow. I had to go buy an external floppy drive so that I could copy data off my old disks.

If you want to store pictures in a medium that lasts, make a giant mosaic and bury it. Future generations will be able to see it a thousand years hence.
