A huge portion of the world's population can't afford a computer or won't bother to buy on. I doubt the world will go paperless, and if it did, that about the increased energy consumption with millions of computers turned on? Ecologically, I don't know which isworse.
Sure, if we were to stop cutting down trees in their natural settings things would get a lot better. Their already screwed ecosystems would have a bigger chance at staying intact and adapting as best as possible.
Corporations would need to start their artificial plantations in areas already devastated by humans. Unfortunately, it's cheaper to just go to some forest and chop down existing trees to quicker and higher profits than worry about every other aspect of it.
