I signed up to join the Stop Global Warming Virtual March and I encourage you to add your voice as well. Global warming is the most urgent issue of our time and since we are all contributors to global warming pollution we must all be part of the solution. Joining the Virtual March is a first step to joining the movement to demand solutions now.

You can join by visiting: http://www.stopglobalwarming.org/countmein.asp

StopGlobalWarming.org's mission is to use the strength of numbers to urge our government to address global warming, and urge businesses to start a new industrial revolution of clean energy that reduces our dependence on oil and helps stop global warming.

Together we can make a difference.

London tried to stop Global Warming, and they've lost a lot of tourists, doing so. Hippies just don't like the Old World charm of the Routemaster.

Is there anyone who doesn't already know about this problem? What's the point of a protest? and not even a real protest either.

Also in case you hadn't noticed there is an enormous amount of effort going into solving these problems. Instead of whining, why dont you crank your brain into gear and start thinking of some inventive solutions. There will be enormous amounts of money to be made from all this for anyone who comes up with workable solutions. Remember where there is crisis, there is opportunity, Crisatunity!

It strikes me that all these environmentalist types are basically just old hippies and commies who just like to protest all the time because they dont actually know how to do anything else.
Imagine if someone invented something that solved this environmental stuff overnight, they wouldn't know what to do with themselves .

Nah, they'd either complain it wasn't good enough or turn their attention back to drugs and saving the animals.

Anyway, they already have, it's called bicycles and vegetarianism. ;)

How can we stop something that doesn't exist??

Might as well say 'stop poltergeist attacks'.

Stop Bigfoot Sightings.

Bloody Nonsense ! !! !

I was waiting for someone to make this point.

*Pops a bag of popcorn, gets pickles and cheese from fridge, and sits down to watch the ensuing debate.*

I got more popcorn if anyone else wants some.

Then again it just occurred to me Prof_Pretorius could have been being sarcastic, and if so I feel like an idiot.

I say we stop the whole "save the planet" argument and start saying "save humanity!"

The planet's weathered far worse things than a shift in temperature in the past, and it will do so again when humanity has withered away.

I wasn't being sarcastic ! ! (For once.)

Go to the website for Popular Mechanics, they have a lead article regarding oil. At the top of the article they have a map of recent discoveries. It'll make your head spin around backwards. There's a Natural Gas field discovered in the USA just this year (2008) that is estimated at 516 TRILLION cubic feet ! !! They have dubbed it a super giant,

There is a term for the petition and the OPs post. that is slactivism. Its when someone forms commitees, protests, petitions and whatnot instead of actually getting their hands dirty.

For example, if you march to protest pollution, you are essentially saying "someone should do something about this, but not me. I did my part by protesting." There is a reason why actions count more than words, and people that are busy talking are not generally busy working.

Plus the whole concept of global climate change/warming is starting to break.

Global warming could become a good thing with more water and less cold weather along with the CO2, which is supposed to cause it, it could eventually mean more plant growth and so forth.

Has anyone here actually read the IPCC's report on climate change? or read about the issue? From what I've found, most people who deride global warming know next to nothing about it. Maybe they saw Gore's stupid movie, and thought it was stupid (it was), or they listened to too much Fox news. When you start reading the technical side, it becomes harder and harder to deny our influence on the climate.

Now, humanity will survive, of course, but not without problems. Global warming will likely cause increased desertification due to increased evaporation, and shifting in rain patterns (ie possible drought), rise in sea levels (the Greenland ice sheet IS melting), plant and animal extinctions as habitats shift, and a myriad of other problems. This is the alarmists perspective, admittedly, but it's not going to be all roses.

If anyone has an honest question about climate change (not a flamer) feel free to messege me--I've done a lot of reading and have links to sites with non-dumbed down explanations. Ironically, the issue has really become too polarized to debate fruitfully for most.

Sorry this was a bit lecture-y, global warming is one of my obsessions

Went to the IPCC website, and to tell the truth, I don't have hours and hours to slog through reports full of Three Letter Abreviations.

Here's the short version: If we are experiencing warming, why was this winter one of the coldest? If we are experiencing warming, why are the oceans not showing any change in temperature?

There is no need to worry about global warming. Why? Because the Yellowstone SuperVolcano will release enough Sulfur Dioxide to drop the global temp by several degrees. And so all the CO2 released by humans will make the next deep freeze less severe.

There are aspects to climate change that are bogus, specifically people trying to make money off of it. Don't buy "carbon credits" or any such nonsense.

However, to deny the effect we are having on the Earth is lunacy.

Just to be a realist, I'll say this. We are not going to stop climate change. Even if we had the intention of doing so, it's very likely too late. Of course, we don't actually have the intention to do so. As such, we're basically doomed. Sorry.

The most concise argument I've seen with regards to climate change is the following.
