This was just posted in an online community I'm a member of; it's in reply to a poster who got quite forthright and rude (with justification, imo):

Quote:
My very real apologies if you are autistic or any other kind of mental
condition that makes ordinary social skills a major problem for you. I
have met autistic people on online communities who genuinely have
problems like yours, which they cannot help, with such skills.
But if this is so you need to tell people so allowances can be made. A
good way to do it is to place a note in your standard email signature
which is what autistics do often do.

Well, quite apart from the implied insult to all auties - do any of you actually state in your email/forum sigs that you are autistic? I simply don't believe that!
The whole idea offends me - what next, coloured stars to wear on our clothing?

Nope, I've never done that, or heard of anyone doing it. Unless you count that my WP profile includes my diagnostic status as Asperger's- Diagnosed. But then, you have to answer that when you register for an account here, and it's not like I'm going to lie about my diagnosis on an AS site.

Sounds "fishy" to me. It could be a scam.

I did that on one site, ( a UK one ), because I was so excited about the possibility that I was AS, when i was moving from thinking of myself as introvert. I put it on my profile page.

It backfired on me though, because of exactly the above reaction on the part of an influential member of the site, who pointed it out, in the most sympathetic way, several pages into a heated discussion, as an explanation/excuse for my genuine truth-seeking refusal to accept a few other people's argument about something, suggesting that perhaps it was something that I would have trouble understanding/dealing with because of AS.

Everybody went happily away, relieved to hear that the serious conflict and fundamental questioning was just because of someone's disability. My position was no longer taken seriously. :( :?

it should not be used as a way to be nasty if thats what they meant by rude?

am state am LFAutie or just Autie on forums in signatures because many users automatically assume are aspie, and it helps not having to state that in posts that require it all the time,it helps if are Autie/LF Autie [or are not aspie for any other reason] and get misunderstood/abused by users who do not understand the differences in own autism/whatever.
Am would say, yes, use it in signature if are NT,ASD,aspie or autie, but if it's an NT focussed board that might not work out so good and might look like excuses.
on a forum that is based on ASD/related stuff,it's okay because most users will understand and not treat as different.

Why don't we all wear shirts saying AVOID ME - I'M CONTAMINATED.

Being serious now, it's probably just a wind-up. You should never be obliged to state on the Internet any conditions you have, other than on sites that are dedicated to one (such as here.)

No, I don't. I'm not against anyone doing so if they want to but it's not something that I'd choose to do.

No. It would never occur to me to do that. Nor have I seen anyone else do so on a site that is not ASD-related.

I would not want my signature to say anything about AS because it would be a distraction from whatever I wanted to say. I don't even like to have a signature to begin with.

I frequent a lot of writer's boards and often do critiques for the writing works of others (usually short stories and such). Anyhow, I have offended people unintentionally when I point out different things they need to do in order to improve their story (beef up the plot, cut the fluff, use their spellchecker, etc), and I tend to be very clinical in doing so. After I managed to get a reputation on one site for being especially cold-blooded (I broke from the 'norm' on the site - if someone's work is not up to par, I'll tell them so - but with reasons), I ended up having to explain that I have AS (along with links pointing to info on the syndrome) and why I may sound 'unfeeling' while giving a critique. My intention was never to hurt anyone's feelings, only to help, but in my attempt to answer their request for an unbiased opinion, I tend to be a little more unbiased than most people. I thought briefly about posting something about AS in my sig, but then I decided against it, feeling that people would then disregard my opinions based on preconceived notions they might have about people with varying levels of autism. Besides, IMO, if they don't hear hard-nosed criticism from me, they'll surely hear it from an editor or publisher in the form of a rejection letter.
