hello everyone, i just registered on the forums. i dont know yet if i am autistic or similar, but i have long suspected i am, due to my having difficulty communicating, esp. about feelings. i often feel i just dont connect with others, and when i do, its often because the other person is 'different' too. i havnt really pursued the route of getting diagnosed, because i dont really see what a doctor could do, is their any treatment? also, the fact that i was officially diagnosed may mean i would start telling people, and that might mean fewer job prospects etc. any advice ?

I figure that getting diagnosed could lead to therapy of one kind or another that can help you learn skills for handling regular people. I'm probably going to be diagnosed with Asperger's Syndrome soon. I won't tell prospective employers about it, but I'll tell friends.

I'm in a similar boat so I'm curious to hear the advice too.

Several years ago I was in therapy for depression, but I didn't find it useful because whenever I told the therapist I didn't know how to do something, like talk to someone for instance, she would try to be reassuring, instead of understanding that I meant it literally. I don't know if it exists, but a kind of therapy where the therapist would actually help explain things would help me. It's frustrating to have to figure everything out on your own!

Welcome TheBat,

Have you tried the aspie quiz

http://www.rdos.net/eng/Aspie-quiz.php

If you just want to know what you are, this will help.

Getting a medical opinion is useful if you have major employment or schooling issues.

Other than that, it doesn't really help.

my score on the test :

Your Aspie score: 128 of 200
Your neurotypical (non-autistic) score: 62 of 200
You are very likely an Aspie
