I want to know why people in this country think it is OK to give special rights, tax breaks, and special consideration simply based on their sexual orientation and choosen lifestyle.

Everyone in this country should be treated equal under federal law. Marriage between a man and woman, gives these select minority of people in our country special entitlement and tax breaks. There are literally 1000s of special additional rights these people get under federal regardless of need, but soley because they choose to live a particular sexual lifestyle with a person of the opposite sex.

Seems discriminatory to me. I think everyone should have the same rights and finacial responsibilities regardless of the sexual lifestyle they choose.

I find it difficult to understand why those
who purposely live their lives so far out of
the mainstream would deem it necessary to
have their lives so widely accepted. If one
desires the same rights and privilages as
that of normal society, then they should
conform to those same standards.

Some people cannot. Rights should be that, rights, not privleges earned.

There are some pretty messed up things in this
country but nothing yet as bad as taxpayers
funding homosexuality.. Thank God.

Not this crap. Ignorance = Discrimination

There are some messed up things in this world but how does homosexuality count if they are 2 consenting adults that do no harm to eachother or others. I have a cousin who's gay and he does pretty well for himself. I'm pretty sure people don't always pick their orientation just to be ridiculed by people who look down on it like yourself.

We have tax breaks for farmers because there is support for giving them a little extra something to encourage that. The same is true for breeders - we need kids, and society gives certain breaks to heterosexual couples. Not every hetero couple breeds, and one could argue that giving any different treatment is wrong. But the tax code is a convoluted mess, and that is just one example of a policy designed to 'encourage' behavior that society values. There are hundreds of common and obscure tax credits created for such purposes (Katrina investment credit, ethanol production credit, New York Liberty Zone (9/11) credit, Hybrid car deduction, tuition credits, etc.)

Homosexuality is pretty common. Furthermore, the gay community has worked hard to embed themselves in this culture, and they have gained a very high degree of visibility, sympathy, and credibility. Our cause has become not only widely accepted but, in fact, quite popular. Furthermore, the gay community has gone a long way toward conforming, within the restrictions of their sexual orientation, to the norms and mores of our culture. We have cooperated in every respect except for changing our sexual orientation, which is simply not possible.

I'm not going to worry too much about the gay marriage issue, though. As I have said elsewhere, this is inevitable as long as we are allowed to live our lives in peace, without anxiety about our continued freedom, in fellowship with our fellow countrymen. From the position that we are in now, having the right to marry is simply a matter of patience. It is in the best interests of the gay community not to push the issue too hard but maintain a quiet insistence. I would like to see gay marriage come to pass without fanfare or controversy. Our movement has a great deal of inertia right now. It just needs to finish playing out.

Fred is just a stupid hick who can't accept that 1945 has came and gone. Just another extremely xenophobic 3 tooth redneck loser. Yeah, I said it.

Fred, were you the one who got ticked off when I did the redneck bashing thread? If so, it's funny how you prove me right.... I don't tolerate a culture of intolerance, sorry, but it's a hypocritical concept.

I think his statement is the very reason certain minorities are given "special" treatment. Sort of like saying, "Gee, I was wrong. I'm sorry." without actually having to fess up.

Kind of like how the Jews got a country after WWII. Scapegoats 4tw!

"Marriage" is a social construct, it means whatever a society wants it to mean. Claiming that allowing gay people to get married is a "special right" is based on naively taking a social constriction (Marriage = a union between a man and a woman) and treating it as a law of nature.

Gay marriage does not exist. It cannot. There's no such thing.
