The World Ends With You
Anyone else have this game? It's a recently developed DS game published by Square Enix, and it's the best RPG to come out on the DS so far, in my opinion. It's reminds me a bit of Kingdom Hearts: Chain of Memories for the GBA except the combat system is much better, the story is actually good and it doesn't suffer from the painful repetition of that title.
It's very original and makes full use of the DS's capabilities, as most of the combat is handled via touch controls not unlike Zelda Phantom Hourglass. You have to control two characters simultaneously during battles, which becomes second nature after a few hours even if initially it's hard to get used to looking out for both characters. You fight using 'pins' which act sort of like cards in KH:COM, or materia in FFVII, and serve as all your skills, magic, etc and which level up during use. There are hundreds of these pins, and many evolve into other pins if you level them up enough.
One thing I really like about the battle system is that after each battle you're graded on how fast you killed the enemies, and how much damage you incurred vs. dealt out, and your EXP rewards get multiplied big time based on how well you do (up to 5 or 6 times, or more). This means that the game encourages skill during battle rather than just battling the same enemies over and over again. There are also multiple difficulty levels, from easy to hard and then ultimate once you've completed the game, and you can change the difficulty within a game.
Another thing that appeals to me is that characters can be powered up in numerous ways. Levelling simply provides you with more HP, most of your stat bonuses come from eating food, which is readily available around the game world from shops. Food is consumed in real time, meaning you can only eat so much in one day and it takes time to digest each bit of food. Different foods provide different bonuses, and are permanent, so if you want to spend your whole game time eating as many foods with +1 strength bonuses, you'll have a much higher attack by the end of the game.
The music throughout the game is excellent. Not your typical Square Enix fare as the game is set in the modern world, and it makes use of numerous tracks from several genres, including pop, hip hop, metal, punk, and electronica.
If you haven't heard of the game yet and enjoy RPGs but are a bit tired of the formula or just want something new, check out this game.
I've heard about this. Nice title. Better than the Japanese one (It's a Wonderful World). I haven't got it yet, and at the moment, I don't intend to. But it seems intriguing.
The reason why it reminds you so much of Kingdom Hearts: Chain of Memories is that it's by the same guys.
The World Ends With You. Great title.

I'm bumping this topic up rather than starting my own.
I really, really like this game. I'm not exactly a hardcore gamer: my DS is the first game system I've owned (weren't allowed them as a kid, couldn't afford them as a teenager), but it's the best game I've played on it so far. I have to admit to already being into Japanese culture though, so I rather enjoy the setting too. But the story line is my main attraction to it. I love complex, twisty stories, and I love the characters and the setup and the action in this one. Plus, I rather like the fact that your health regenerates for each new battle, because that's what normally kills me. XD Having said which, for the first time I'm doing better than my boyfriend in a game: I have more ESPer points than he does!
I really like the way they've set up the experience points. Getting points from shut down is as much annoying as it is genius: I don't like having my game down to get them! I'm taking my DS to the convention I'm going to on the weekend in the hope that other people will have the game, or at least DSs, so I can get even more mingling points, and continue to be beaten on tin pin slammer (I'm yet to win a game, except for the one actually in the game, which rather shocked me).
Sometimes the pins get in the way of each other in battles, which can be annoying, but that's the only thing I haven't liked so far.

I got the game soon after it came out. I was already excited to get it for it being from the Kingdom Hearts team, and I love Nomura's artwork. The story and controls are great, and I also love how the setting of the game is the modern day, unlike the last few games I've played that take place other times and other planets.
What I really like the most about The World Ends With You is the hero, Neku Sakuraba. He's a guy I can really identify with. I'm mostly no different than him in many ways. He lived most of his life not caring for help from strangers, but throughout the game he realizes that you can accept other people to make your life better, just like I realized around his age. Do you think Neku has AS? I can't wait to figure out how the game ends, I haven't quite beaten it yet.
