I have gone to the sci-fi convention DragonCon for the past 3 years to compete in the battlebots tournament held there. I will still enter the battlebots tournament this year, but I want to go in costume this time and maybe enter a costume contest.

I have narrowed my costume choices down to 2

Lavos (final Chrono Trigger Boss)
-or-

A can of POWERTHIRST (fake energy drink from popular viral video)

Which sounds like a better idea?
The powerthirst can costume would be much easier to make and transport compared to the lavos costume.
For those of you who havn't played chrono trigger, lavos is not anthropomorphic, but more like a giant tick or some other parasitic insect. A lavos costume would have to be a 6 foot by 6 foot dome, It would be hard to transport.
On the other hand, more people have heard of lavos than of powerthirst,

Which costume should I make?

Don't forget, you don't have to cosplay as the Lavos shell. What about the humanoid forms?

I considered that, but I prefer the lavos shell to the two inner forms for several key reasons:

1. When most people think of Lavos, they think of the lavos shell. If I cosplayed as either of the other two forms, I would only be noticed and correctly identified by hardcore chrono trigger fans

2. Lavos's 2nd form is nearly identical to Cell from Dragonball Z, an anime/franchise that I hate with a passion. Akira Toriyama designed both DBZ and chrono trigger characters, hence the similarities. I would hate to work really hard on a costume only to be mistaken for cell.

3. Lavos's 3rd form is really hard to reach in Chrono Trigger, it is also very small and rather forgettable, design-wise. Again, only chrono trigger die-hards would recognize this one.

4. The lavos shell is bad-ass

Oh, I can think of many other things that are more bad-ass than Lavos' shell, but I do agree with you about Lavos' second form looking too much like Cell. Blame Akira Toryama for designing both Chrono Trigger and Dragonball.

By creating a Lavos shell, wouldn't you have to be on castors or something? You know, little wheels on the bottom of the shell?

I might put wheels on it, but that might not be necessary. I'm planning on making it with a wire frame, thin scrap metal and paper mache. It should be light enough to hold up while I walk.

The reason why I asked was that I was going to suggest you go as a Dalek instead. You probably don't have the budget or resources, though.

Daleks are EVERYWHERE at DragonCon. Not even high quality, expensive dalek costume is impressive anymore. They acheive complete saturation of the convention year after year. I have never seen or heard of a lavos cosplay before, though. Even if it dosen't turn out great, it will stand out.

Seriously, a lot of Daleks? I didn't think there'd be that many at an American convention...

I would cosplay as Luffy and any other character I like from my anime choices.
