This is one of those things I've been into for a while, I'd say since 1998 ar so (producing) and although it was more acid techno and hard trance early on I always liked jungle more than anything else genre-wise. I think one of the reasons why I haven't been able to get into producing as much as I'd like to and have only come up with about 3 finalized d&b tracks in the past 3 years has been mosly due to gear limitations, how that's kind of worn my creative morale down a bit, and especially being in college and working full time.

Anyway, this is one I just threw together in the past couple weeks and part of the motivational spur was getting a new program to work with.
As for the name 'Wendigo' and why I picked it, it's one of those things I remember as a kid from a book I read, you can get a good rundown from Wikipedia if you scope it, and just like the name this a pretty seriously sick and surreal track - great timing that I'm dropping it a couple weeks before Holloween. Not that my producings always this dark and manic, I like a little bit more funk and hip-hop flare sunk in a lot of times, it's just kinda like my first d&b track 'Terminating Sequence - it just went that way.

As for talking about production limitations, one of the reasons the beat doesn't change up much is because of that - I got locked into the sounds based on what I had available to work with; I'd like to think that at least that having enough other melodic or effect-driven elements and having the periodic changes compensated that out well. As for why the track takes a good 1:30 to warm up, that's just how production style in this genre is supposed to go - more or less something simplistic for the dj to cue in on from one vinyl to the next.

Anyway, here's the link, just right click and "save target as"...

5 PRYME - Wendigo

Any questions, comments, or hollas, I'd be more than happy to take em on :)

Go ahead everybody, give it a listen. It's probably pretty different from what you're used to listening to but different can be good. I highly recommend it. :D

Sounds interesting, but to spectral analysis indicated that you had a LOT of info going on in the 120-200Hz Range that appeared to be stomping on the LF and some upper mids. I tweaked it a little bit in Wavelab. wanna hear the results?

Sure, I'd definitely be interested. BTW, is there a freeware program to do that kind of analysis?

Not that I know of.... I also took the liberty of boosting LF between 40 and 80Hz as well as Mids between 1-4Khz via Variable Band Comp as well as a few other things. I'll attempt to send via GMail.

Interesting stuff. A bit repetitive, but I still liked it.

Didn't think I'd like it, cause I mostly go for stuff that has more melody and less beat, but the eeriness really worked. Inspired a sketch (I had it on loop playing in the background) so hopefully that counts for something.

lol sure, though it's nothing much, just a scribbled concept in Corel Painter. No need to scan it as I did it with a wacom tablet.

Yeah, a wacom (http://www.wacom.com/graphire/4x5.cfm) uses a pressure-sensitive pen. The software simulates all kinds of brushes and mediums - not that this sketch really takes advantage of them, but the potential is there.

What software did you use to produce the song ?

Pretty cool track, vry dark. The drum beat was a bit too off and repetitive though. But i like it :)

Yeah, the beat needed swing to it, usually drumwork like that is swung out to have a bit more life, hop, and bounce. Usually the drums are a lot more chaotic, breaky, etc. - I would have loved to do more with it but like I said, I had sh-- to work with. As for the program I used to make this, it was Reason. I'm thinking about getting my hands on Absynth one of these days soon to make better sickbass with - the bassline I had in there wasn't too bad but still, I could do much more twisted and enthralling stuff on there than I can with Reason's Subtractor or Maelstrom synths.
