Am I a bad role model?

I attended voulenteer orientation for teaching art to at risk troubled teens.

The more I listened the more I wished I could join the program not mentor it!

I am "emotionally disturbed" and " Learning impaired"! !!

How can I model good behavior all the time when I am Autistic?

Its been a long time since I worked. If I get canned from a voulenteer position I don't know what I'll do. Maybe not taking the risk is better. But if I don't I close the window on doing what I need to help me out of my present funk.

You seem to be able to cope with these problems therefore I would call you 'Uniquely Qualified'.

In fact asking this question itself proves you can help.

I think you maybe be able to help a lot of troubled teens, because it sounds like you have had problems yourself.

You may be able to relate to them better. I'm sure you will have something to offer them.

If you were them would you rather listen to someone with 3 PhD's, or to someone else who'd knew what being an "outsider" was like?

Well, there is no reason off-hand to think you are a terrible role-model. The issue is whether or not you know how to work through your own problems to some extent, and whether or not you are willing to invest in other people. I mean, the best role-models are the ones who can genuinely express some level of caring, even if they don't necessarily have a lot of other competencies.

I ask myself that everyday. It's just about helping others like me, but about others in general. My sister and cousins for example.

But honestly I look at my own situation. I live on my own. I pay my own rent and have a job that I at least enjoy some of the time. And I can afford some of the nice things in life that I've always wanted.

I rose above all of those as*holes who said I would never get far in life.

Then I think, yeah. I make a pretty good role model to those kids who are being told the same thing.
