I like just about anything by Joe Oliver's Creol Jazz Band or Louis Armstrong, with his Hot 5 or Hot 7 bands, from the '20s.
Joe Oliver (standing in the back, holding a cornet) and his Creole Jazz Band.
From the same time period, Naftule Brandwein and Dave Tarras were the biggest proponents of the clarinet in klezmer music. Naftule was particularly baddass. Once he performed on stage while wearing an Uncle Sam outfit adorned with christmas lights, nearly catching himself on fire.
Also in the '20s, John McKenna, one of the all-time great fluters, was one of the first Irish musicians to come to the USA to record. I play flute myself, and continually strive to be as good as he was.
And of course all the great musicians before them, in these respective genres.
