Are you able to drive a stick shift in a car?

I am guessing that a higher percentage of people with AS compared with NTs can not drive stick shift due to the way our minds work.

Yes, and I can drive an 18 speed truck too, double clutching

I can't drive and I probably won't ever due to visual spacial issues, though I will give it a shot someday.

It's easier to drive stick than it is to drive automatic.

I enjoy driving, more or less. It took a lot of time to learn (45 lessons), but I managed to get a full drivers license; so I can drive using a stick shift. (In the Netherlands you only get a full license if you did the exam in a stick shift car, when you take your exam in an 'automatic' one you get a limited license)

I've never tried driving a manual.

I drove a mini-bike that was manual once, but I just kept it in first gear or whatever.

Won't drive anything but a stick. I suppose it's some sort of stim thing, but I feel awkward without something for my hand to do. Besides, a manual transmission gives you more control over the whole experience, you shift gears when the feel and sound of the engine tell you it's time, you don't have to wait for some preprogrammed robot device to get around to it.

I learned on a stick, so I can drive either.

I hardly drive an automatic

I find it much easier to drive a scooter or motorcycle than a car.

In a car, the window creates a "frame", and my mind appears to have trouble modelling the outside world when it's framed like that.

On a 2-wheeled vehicle, i am immersed in the environment, frameless, and it's much easier ....

Yes, I can drive a manual, but I had to learn the Aspie way. First I read all about it, then I went alone into a parking lot and practiced for 3 hrs until i could do it.

I used to be scared to death of ever having to drive a stick shift, especially in town or crowded traffic. Then I learned how and now I won't drive a car unless it's manual. I feel more in control with a stick shift.

I've only tried a couple times with a stick shift and I didn't do very well. I figure it this way though... I'm a clutz, it's probably better to stick to manuals for the safety of everyone than to try to force myself to get used to something I've already proven doesn't come naturally to me.

One of our pickups is a stick shift. I can drive it ok, but I get nervous when in traffic and tend to stall it. I do fine doing ranch chores in it though.
