Hello!

Found out about this new site from the MAAP newsletter. Excellent - it's about time! Most sites about AS are for parents and teachers of children who have it. There's not enough out there for adults (and teenagers) who have it! I'm 38 and self-diagnosed four years ago. Like another adult quoted in an article about it, 'nothing's changed but everything's changed' because of it. I've got nearly 20/20 hindsight now - nearly every bad thing that happened to me over 30 years, before I diagnosed myself, now makes sense! That's comforting. But it's bittersweet - I see the missed and blown opportunities for friends, romance, jobs, etc. I may never get again. I went out on my own completely 15 years ago hoping for a shot at a life - hope it's not too late! I live on my own and work so I'm already somewhat ahead. And have had four girlfriends - four more than I would have had if I hadn't set out on my own. I say 'everything's changed' because thanks to what I now know, I usually can avoid the mistakes I used to make and so nothing REALLY bad happens anymore - job loss is the worst thing.

What I want is to do more than survive but thrive - to actually make it among normal people on my own terms. Trouble is I'm not a techie/maths and science Aspie - they get the good jobs like college professorships - but one of those dreamy, artsy ones.

Thanks for this site and if you want to read more about me and my interests, etc., check out my blog.

hello, young fogey.

nothing wrong with being an artist/dreamer - where would we be without music and books and art...

science and maths have more kudos in today's society (in the west, certainly), and so it's a struggle for any artist. i've done both - was a scientist, am now writing, and it's obvious where the jobs are!

off to peer at your blog...

p.s. i'm 42 - crumblies are fab.

Yes! I'm not a wiz at math either....and I'm somewhat artsy, too. I agree with wanting to do more than survive and I love your name "young fogey" as it is how my son has always seen himself. Welcome.
