I said Princess Mononoke because I like the meaning behind the movie, if I had to choose another it'd be Nausicaa: Valley of the Wind (the very first anime I saw back when I was little back in the early 80s).

I've seen all of them except Nausica, and my two favourites are Spirited Away, ( which I liked more on a second viewing; the first time I think it went over my head rather ), and Castle in the Sky/Laputa.

The bit I love most in Laputa is the start with the amazing music and the ancient flying battleships, the creation of the war engines, etc. I don't know why but it makes me feel very sad in a good way. And the scene the boy keeps "remembering" of his father's flight into the storm, and the flying. Hiyazaki really is a genius at portraying flight.

I like all of the others too, esp Porco Rosso, apart from Kiki which I found deeply annoying.

I can't decide which to vote for out of my two favourites though. :?

The last three in the list are monumental.

Nausicaa. I think it's his best film. I was blown away by it. I plan on buying that and Castle in the Sky soon. I'm trying to own all my favorites of his. A close second would be Spirited Away. Btw, you left out The Castle of Caglistro.

Spirited Away. Just so wonderfully trippy, very beautiful. Didn't much care for the others I saw, but then I'm a curmudgeon sometimes.

I really stuck between Nausicaa, Spirited Away and Mononoke.

Maybe Spirited Away by a whisker, because:-
The main character had no super powers,
The 3 Russian heads,
and ofcourse 'noface'.

Edit: and ofcourse the ending theme sung in that beautiful voice.

My favourite is Castle of Cagliostro, especially since I first saw it when it was made into a video game called Cliff Hanger (fortunately, I got to see the original version in university). However, I have to recommend a movie called Whisper of the Heart. There's no sci-fi, no fantasy, not even any over-the-top humour. It's just a very simple, beautiful story about a girl who's working on a Japanese-language translation of the song Country Road, Take Me Home, and a boy whose ambition in life is to move to Italy and become a master violin maker.

Anyway, just thought I'd throw that one out.

It's going to be a tie between Kiki's and Princess Mononoke for me.

I've owned Nausicaä for over two years, possibly three years now, and still haven't watched it, really need to get around to doing that.

Yoshifumi Kondo directed it, not Miyazaki

EDIT: Nevermind, you never mentioned that it was directed by Miyazaki
:P

Howl's Moving Castle, even though I've only seen part of it. It's actually based off a book by Diana Wynne Jones, which I have read. It's kinda cool that a Western book inspired a Japanese movie. Wish someone could do the same with Harry Potter or something like that, any HP anime would be better than the actual movies for that series...
