The UK government is insisting that greater powers are needed to deal with threat from terrorism - the power to detain suspects for 3 months (at least) without trial, without access to lawyers, contact with family, etc. Now - drugs are having a far greater disruptive effect upon society. If the police had the power to detain suspected drug-dealers for .....

No doubt they would get masses of info:

"Tell us what you know and we'll let you go," sort of thing.

Hey presto! No "drug problem"! !!

Obviously some poor innocent sod would be dragged in and have his life ruined ... but the distribution of drugs would be severely curtailed - just as the activities of terrorists will be greatly hindered by the new laws the government is seeking to pass.

The worst drug dealers of all are those who sell alcohol. No other drug creates anywhere near the disruptive effect on society that it does. So, if you're going to take away any drug dealers' civil rights, you obviously should start with them.

I don't mean it, really. Just pointing out that the powers that are being demanded by the government could be very effective against crime in general.

I agree with the fact that Alcohol had the biggest and most profound impact, but coke and heroin are major contenders for having a detrimental impact on society.

I think an alcoholic president in the name of George W. is having the greatest detrimental effect on the world today.
