Trends in Reportable Sexually Transmitted Diseases in the United States, 2006

National Surveillance Data for Chlamydia, Gonorrhea, and Syphilis

Sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) remain a major public health challenge in the United States. While substantial progress has been made in preventing, diagnosing, and treating certain STDs in recent years, CDC estimates that approximately 19 million new infections occur each year, almost half of them among young people ages 15 to 24. In addition to the physical and psychological consequences of STDs, these diseases also exact a tremendous economic toll. Direct medical costs associated with STDs in the United States are estimated at up to $14.7 billion annually in 2006 dollars.

For a guy it's like changing... Get out of those clothes and into one rubber suit. Women can just undress completely and not worry about changing. Sometimes instincts are strong enough to void the use of a condom. I'm happy to wear a condom even though I find them cold and annoying.

You can always put the condom packet in your pocket and warm it up first. It may be annoying but having an STD for life could be more than annoying. Getting the woman pregnant and having a baby to pay child support to for 18 years its way more annoying too. As far as the woman comment you might be surprised how many woman wear IUD's. Now that is annoying and perhaps even painful sometimes.

My hometown newspaper said 1 out of 4 young people in town have an STD according to the health dept. That is down right frightening if you think about it. Something everyone should think about next time they jump in the sack with a new person. We're Aspies here... do your math and see how your risk really goes up the more people you sleep with.

There are thinner condoms, female condoms, spermicidal lubricants, all sorts of things that can be used. There is NO excuse for not wearing some sort of condom if you don't want a child!

Well, I am currently doing MY bit for the STD free community, not been with a girl for over 2 years now. I think I may have to donate my spare condoms to someone that will use them before they expire

Condoms don't always protect against everything. Herpes, Syphilis, and Chancroid will spread regardless of condom usage, because the potential area of infection is much greater.

I'd say a lot of the high figures are down to genital HPV, which in most cases is trivial in men. Actually I contracted HPV without any sexual contact with anyone, developed genital warts and eventually had them frozen off without any difficulty. What I'm more afraid of is the fear that surrounds these figures and stories, which may come back to hurt me if I'm honest with future partners about this.
