Hi! Just wondering if I'm the only one that doesn't like voice chat. Just recently Star Wars Galaxies has that as a permanent option right in the game. It really has changed the game for me in a negative way.

First, I developed pseudo relationships via type, so my mind kinda filled in what their voice might sound like, inflections, tone, etc. Now that I can hear them, not what I expected at all which has caused some stress! Not good considering I use the game for relaxation.

Then, if I were to use the microphone, my Aspergian traits will be out of the closet for sure. It was hard enough hiding them with typing but at least there was a delete key, so not too bad.

So what's your experience using Voice?

Well, I don't play online games, but I do use Skype. I find it's a great tool for collaborative writing.

Although World of Warcraft added the ingame voice chat, it's a seldom used feature. It's generally not as good as third party tools that existed previous to implimentation of integrated voice.

One of the guilds that I am part of in WoW (World of Warcraft) uses 'Ventrillo' as a tool to co-ordinate running group events. Though I've never been diagnosed as Aspergers, both my son and a nephew have been diagnosed seperately and it's highly likely that I have it to some degree. I haven't had any problems with the use of Ventrillo for the following reasons.

- I still also quest alone and it's not required that you be in 'Vent' when you're doing your own thing. I still chat/type in the guild channel occasionally.
- I just don't talk much in Vent. I don't talk much in general with people who I am not comfortable 100% with. This is more an observation than decision.
- People love to talk (most people) so that typically makes it easier for me to just sit an listen. Frequently there are already two people trying to talk at the same time anyways. It's seldom that anyone notices or cares that you don't talk much.

I sincerely hope your gaming experience doesn't change as a result of the voice chat implimentation. I've not tried SW Galaxies. Having a means to connect with people is important. When I was a teen in the '80s I played the 'table top' version of Dungeons & Dragons. Those were the longest friendships that I ever had and sadly dissolved after growing up and stopping playing the game.

I hope you can find something positive in the experience. Sometimes it's neat to hear people with other accents as well.

Good luck,
Jon

I use voice chat.

Teamspeak - I configure to a button and then all I have to do is press my button down and I can speak, otherwise the rest of the time nobody hears anything. Its not bad and its sure better than typing contantly like people using MSN all day long.
I mean saying something as simple as this:

=====
P1: I had a long day at college -next line-
P1: The train was late -next line-
P2: Yeah well I've had 6 hours of lectures!
P1: I had to wait on the platform -next line-
P1: There was some guy annoying me and speaking horribly about my hair colour -next line-
=====

Now that might be a bad example, but I'm trying to point out over lapping responses due to the speed we type and read.
Voice chat is instant as if in real life. You can butt in when you want which makes arguments better.

I use GTalk since I have GMail. MSN also is huge for its purpose, it has so many ads taking up system resources RAM/CPU usage which doesn't need to be wasted. GTalk is small sweet and has better voice talk. It only lacks webcam :(

Skype sounds useful but unless I have any friends or any real reason to switch, it feels useless to me.

Ventrillo looks good and I've tried it. The sounds may take getting used to compared to Teamspeak, but the layout isn't bad. It requires different hosting, so I'm stuck with using Teamspeak (I think they should be updating to Version3 soon).

Thanks, Jon, you made me feel better that no one will notice if I don't talk a lot. Now just to keep the mouth shut and not impulsively blurt out something in the heat of the moment, hehe.

I am apprehensive, but once I get used to it I prefer it. I inflect alot in my voice and its nice to not get sincerity/sarcasm confused, which often happens when typing.

I also like how long distance doesn't matter with these programs as well, at least the ones I use. it helps me keep in touch with my girlfriend who lives in Florida.

The reason why I prefer Skype over Ventrilo is that Ventrilo has that one-person-at-a-time thing. But Skype does have its weaknesses. I haven't tried Google Talk. Is it worth the disk space?

My guild used to require me to be on Vent to raid. I turned it on during raids, but I hated it and certainly never talked. As soon as the raid was done, it would go off. I hate voice chat. I hate phones too.

I have xbox live so voice chatting is a lot more common. I rarely feel right talking to other players, but most of the time they are immature kids just trash talking each other anyway. The only times I've really been able to talk on there is when I'm playing with someone who I already had been chatting with on messenger programs for awhile.

Nope, I don't use voicechat. I don't play any games that require it; I'm more into singleplayer games.

I do in WoW. In WoW it is like I am in my element, I know that I am good at it so I have confidence in talking with other people about it so all of my anxieties disappear and I can be "myself" over the voice chat programs. As long as people don't start trying to get to know about me "in rl" I have no issues at all.

As far as online gaming is concerned I play mostly sport games on my 360 (Top Spin 3 and NBA 2K8) and I don't use voice chat, it disturbs me and since 90 % of times I should speak english it would be just a waste of energy :wink:
