Chess? Did you say chess? That strategy game played by Army generals to help them make good decisions in battle? I love that game! I haven't played in a while, but i still hold my victory against my friend John, when i pulled off a checkmate after 45 minutes of furious battle and mind-wrenching stratigic moves. i can't really hold the title of Chessmaster, though, because there is one person that can knock my king between(for the definition of that word in that context, read The Dragonriders of Pern series by Anne McCafferey[one of my favorite books!]) every single time we play: my father. I have beaten him once; just once. that game concluded when, as i wild-goose-chased his king around the board with my queen, i ran him to the edge of the board and into a trap so cunning i didn't even know it was there. his king got caught between the edge of the board, my rook, my bishop, and my previously mentioned queen; an effective checkmate. i still remember that match, but i can't rub it in, or else my dad will challenge me to a rematch, and then i'll really lose. anyways, you sound like serious chess players. maybe i can find an internet chess game, so we can play sometime.

See you later,
Archmage

I'm fond of chess.
I dream very often that I'm playing chess.
I'm not a good chess player, but I love this game.

Yes! I love chess. I haven't had much competition lately so am rusty...I even started up a chess club in this town but not very many people come, so that hasn't helped much. I would really love to play sometime.

So why do not we arrange a small WrongPlanet chess tournament?

Hey All,

Thanks for the great responses....there's a chess club in my town, and it's run by a grandmaster (He played Bobby Fisher to a draw once). Unfortunately, the owner, and most of the players, are on the less-fortunate side of life - most of them are homeless, or are below the poverty line, and so I haven't been back there for many years.

If any of you know a form of chess notation (i.e. Ke4-35, Qe5xBe4, O-O-O in Long Algebraic) you can play a chess game in its entirety by e-mail or private messaging. All you have to do is make some space and time for a chess board in your room and make sure it's not disturbed by anything or anybody.

If none of us know, then I can post a short lesson in my preferred style - Long Algebraic.

Let me know, and I"m glad to see there are so many chess players!! !! <grin>

Sincerely yours,

mentalman

I 've tried playing chess by emails, but I found it difficult, as my cats or my parents kept messing with the board.
Do you know http://www.chess21.com We could play chess there.

Fiddler has suggested that we could play games at http://www.chess21.com - which would be a good solution for us who are not able to keep an undisturbed chess board at home.

However, at that site, you have to download software to run on the website, and you do have to put up with advertising in order to keep it free - that's the downside of it.

Fiddler, is it possible to have a 'group tournament' or 'chess room' just for WrongPlanet.net users on Chess21.com? If so, that would make it possible to have a virtual chess tournament if we could all arrange to be on at the same time. For me that would be difficult as I am a college student and have very little time to play chess or anything else for long periods of time - however, that is not to say I don't want to play.

Let us know Fiddler, and maybe we can come up with something!

Sincerely yours,

mentalman

Hello,

I know there are tournaments, but anyone can participate. As I don't know wether we could organize a tounament by ourselves, I've just sent an email to the webmaster.

I suggest we do the following. We elect a referee (say, webmaster). Then we compose two teams: B and W. Every user can join a team of his/her choice at any stage but cannot change his/her team in the middle of the game.
Every day each team has to make a move by, say, 0:00 +0:00 GMT and 12:00 respectively.
The #wrongplanet channel, this forum or any other means of communication will do. One person (the referee) is responsible for the board, so that the players do not have to worry about their cat messing with pieces. After both teams have made their moves, the referee puts a .gif on the forum showing the current position (easy to do with any chess program).

What do you think?

If any of you can manage to catch me on the weekend sometime, I'd be more than willing to play a game of chess with you on Yahoo! Games. I'm not particularly good at it, but I do enjoy the game.

Hopefully if I can find people to play chess with me now and again, I'll get a rating eventually. I haven't played enough games yet.
