Well I was typing a essay and then all of a sudden my computer shut down on its own. I know the computer old owners (friends of my family said when they gave it to me "It got a lot of viruses". )

Did it just suddenly turn off, or did it go through the shutdown process first? Because if it just turned off, without any notification that it's shutting down, it could be anything. Have you or anyone else ever run a virus scanner on it?

Over Temperature Shutdown. Sometimes when the heat builds up to a pre-defined level it can just turn the power off. Better that the the cost of a new processor and or new board.

I had the computer on for about 20 minutes so it was not like it was so over heated that it would shut down.(also it is windows ME and Idon't think that at the time microsoft would put that in the OS)

I would recommend that you try different online virus scanners.

Try with Eset, Panda and F-Secure.

Or you could try and place the harddisk in an Linux enviroment and do a scan through VNC through a local network or directly through internet.

I am asume'ing that you have a Windows system over there. Am I right? (excuse my bad english grammar sometimes, I'm swedish)

Information about Linux.

If you have the possibility to post something about your computer hardware over there it will be easier to know how to explain to you how you need to do things over there.

If you have an laptop for instance it won't be as easy as unmounting the harddrive for instance is if it was a stationary one. In that case you might need some help, maybe?

Having the harddrive in an Linux enviroment makes all the viruses isolated from attacking the Linux operating system, but since it is a virus, it can be spread through file attachments, excel macros etc etc...

If it's shutting down due to temperature (which can happen in 20 minutes or less, if the cooling fan is not working or the ductwork is clogged with dustbunnies), that would be in the BIOS, which is programmed into the motherboard's chipset, not in the OS. Honestly, the beancounters at Microsoft couldn't care less if you set your computer on fire and dance around it, as long as you've paid the licensing fees for Microsoft Bonfire XP first...

The old pentium 3 processor slot 1, were bad for shutting down like that, both my sisters had IBM's that clogged up with dust and had to be cleaned every 2 months, it was a crappy set up.

I don't think he needs linux, its great for people who are familiar with computers, but I think he needs a working computer and linux would be to much trouble to set up.

Press the Linux link that I provided in the thread or you can do a manual search on the Wikipedia.

Personally I think that Linux is the best operating system available today. And why? Superior security and a well built OS.
