Why is it that because I act differently from NTs they refer to me as "ret*d". Aren't they being ret*d themselves?

Hi there,

Fighting prejudice and ignorance you'll probably always lose. Don't worry too much about it. Keep your honour to yourself, as we Dutch say. Shrugs.

Head up and f**k 'm. Point your nose towards those people who respect you for what you are.

Best of luck,
C.

There are a lot of ignorant people who assume that anyone with a disability is "ret*d." They use it as a general term. I think it makes them sound ignorant and is more degrading to them than to the person they say it to. I'm sure it's hurtful though.

They apparently don't know the first thing about psychology if they think AS means mental retardation. They are mutually exclusive!

I wouldn't call them 'ret*d' just because that lumps people with developmental disabilities in with the jerks, and nobody needs that. But 'ignorant' or 'hateful'? Oh, yeah.

I think that they were being ignorant, like a lot of typical kids are.

I have always hated that word... and its a disgrace even to those who are truly intellectually impaired. Anyone who is "different" according to these jerks are considered to be "ret*d" and its terrible.

Yeah I got some of that BS headed my way when I was in education.
It drove me mad - the hatred inside me was constantly brewing... but I'm through that.

So, I'm not entirely sure what to suggest, as it got to me... but such people who portray that level of ignorance and prejudice are the ret*d ones themselves - you're quite right.
Such people aren't worth a thought - worth less than the dirt they walk on.

Try your best to ignore them if you can.

Yea different is wrong in many peoples eyes which is just horrible. ret*d is a word thats used all the time if the person doesnt do what society expects them to do, and thats just stupid. Hopefully one day the word ret*d won't be in peoples vocabularies(i spelled that word wrong lol). Sorry you had to endure something like that, I get that a lot too unfortunely.

Or maybe it'll just be a neutral term for people with MR, like "blonde" is a term for people with light hair. Either way would be OK with me.

ret*d ret*d ret*d. It's just a word, it goes into your ear then you process it however you see fit. We all choose how to take something, Aspergers or not and I'll be damned if I'm going through my life worrying about a word. What about the good ole "Ass Burger" jibe? I've come to accept that because Aspergers does infact sound like Ass Burgers, to take it as the joke it is, not as some personal attack on my psyche.

We cannot erradicate words, they mean different things to each and every one of us and people will always say them.

I laugh when someone says Ass Burger, because I do admit that I can be an ass burger, at times.

In a way, they're not wrong because AS is social retardation.

While I do agree that calling something ret*d when it's not is bad, I don't see why being a bit slow is bad.

So what if maybe they aren't as 'smart' as you are? Does that make them some sort of green, shameful, disgusting bug?

MR technically is a disability, but who are we to judge it? I say let people live as they will, slow, 'ret*d', genius, or normal.

What if you learned how to do it all in a short period, decide that it's boring, and then revert to your old state because you didn't like all those little social things? 8O

But you didn't.
No Aspie ever has.

Sure, you can conform - but you'll never feel the same way or get the same out of socializing as a full-blown NT.

Aspies can kid themselves they've tried NTypicality and discarded it in favour of Aspidity, all they like.
But they'll still just be kidding themselves.
