my daughter was diagnosed with as about one year ago and now she is starting to have these head jerks and uncontrolable grunts. i just dont know what to do. im scared for her. shes eleven years old and smart, witty, artistic and beautiful. she has an appointment with our family physician in a couple of days. it just seems like forever to get a diagnosis. is asperger a prelude to other illnesses?

thanks for any help in advance

it sounds like your daughter may have tourette's syndrome. this is one of many co-morbid disorders associated with AS. there may be medication available that will help reduce her symptoms of TS but my advice is to avoid this unless absolutely necessary because many medications have side effects that are worse than the problem that they are supposed to alleviate.

the symtoms of TS are more apparent when the person with the disorder is experiencing excitement or stress. some symtoms can temporarily disappear for weeks at a time. eleven was the age when i developed TS.

My son has tics that show up when stressed. It kind of works as a baromoter for me as he is not likely to tell me when things are going badly at school. He has never been dx with tourettes but I'm sure that's just because I have never mentioned the tics to anyone. I wouldn't want to medicate them away. First because they really aren't causing a problem for anyone and second because I worry I would never know when life is really stressing him out.

My son has ticks too. I use them as a gauge to determined how stressed he is as well. Right now his lips are completely chapped from licking them so much! I wouldn't medicate either. That only masks the problems. Better to find out what is stressing him and then help him learn to over come the issue.

They definitely sound like tics if not full blown Tourette's. Your physician will hopefully refer you on to a neurologist. If he/she doesn't, I'd ask for a referral.

As to your question, there are many disorders which can accompany AS: ADHD, ADD, Tourette's or other Tic Disorders, OCD, ODD, stuttering, anxiety disorders, and depression, plus others.
