I was born into the church (double descendant of George Q. Cannon and his sister Mary Alice Cannon). But, I never cared for it. I suspect that the push to socialize only within the church (in the mid-1960s when I experienced such things) caused me to dislike other members. I avoided my neighboring church members. When I was 19 years of age, I asked to be excommunicated. My bishop was great, and said that I had valid reasons to leave. His first counselor, however, didn't like how chummy we had become. We made a couple jokes during the Bishop's Court, and the counselor actually, truly, chastized the bishop, his superior. Yikes.
But, my experiences made it possible for me to become friends with many LDS legislators years later. They often remarked how honest I was about legislation, good and bad, even if it hurt my argument. They appreciated my honesty.
