ANIMAL rights groups are up in arms over an annual festival in Peru that serves up hundreds of fried CATS to locals.
The 'Gastronomical Festival of the Cat' – dubbed the 'Massacre of the Moggies' – sees townsfolk in Canete, near Lima, feast on the fluffy pets for two days.

They believe that eating cat burgers – and fried cat legs and tails – can cure bronchial disease.

It is also believed that feline meat serves as an aphrodisiac.

The cats are bred especially for this festival – which takes place at the end of September on the Day of Santa Ifigenia.

But it has generated fury among animal rights groups.

A PETA spokesman said: "“If Peruvians really eat poor old Moggy because they think his meat cures bronchitis, that’s about as bizarre as it gets, although remember that Asians eat monkey bits thinking that will cure their impotence and even Europeans butcher poor old Bessie the cow or Henny Penny the hen, because they see them as nothing more than a bit of nourishment.

“Having toured slaughterhouses for dogs in Taiwan, horses in Texas, and chickens and cows in Europe, PETA’s staff says the last thing we need to do is add yet another poor animal to the list of those being frightened and slaughtered for a taste.”

I see this as no different to us having any other kind of food eating festival. In America, on Thanksgiving everyone eats a Turkey. This is no different. The only part where we could find offence is that many of us posses pet cats.

Yea, but I'm sure that in some country, someone has a pet turkey and would be appaled at what we do with them.

When is PETA going to grow a pair and realise that most of these animals used for any sort of food are used because of the culture? You'd have to change the thinking of an entire group of people and thats damn near impossible. I understand not beating the poor things to death or tormenting them during their short existence, but people are not going to stop eating something just cause some group says don't.

Turkeys do not make good pets, but cats do. As do dogs. But non-pet animals like cows, fish, and pigs are acceptable harvest animals.

Cruelty transcends culture and creed. Animal toture in the USA is animal torture in India, Taiwan, and every other foreign place.

i dont eat cat but i see that PETA gets yet another mention in nationak press and they dont concentrate on the cat story they quickly divert attention to other animal rights issues.

it is the third time this week they have come up in the news, 1 for posting a reward for a serial cat killer in the Uk, this story and the milk causes autism advertisement.

i think they have a new press officer.

Choosing which animals you will and will not eat is arbitrary, and based solely on emotion and/or personal taste.
There's simply no right or wrong to it.

yeah, actually in my country some people believe that cat fur (not burgers) can heal bronchial disease... some of those idiots also eat dog lard cause they believe it streghtens their immune system.

I hope they choke on it.

But it is the Christian thing to do!

The Apostle Luke, in Acts 19:9-16 wrote:
About noon the following day as they were on their journey and approaching the city, Peter went up on the roof to pray. He became hungry and wanted something to eat, and while the meal was being prepared, he fell into a trance. He saw heaven opened and something like a large sheet being let down to earth by its four corners. It contained all kinds of four-footed animals, as well as reptiles of the earth and birds of the air.

Then a voice told him, "Get up, Peter. Kill and eat."

"Surely not, Lord!" Peter replied. "I have never eaten anything impure or unclean."

The voice spoke to him a second time, "Do not call anything impure that God has made clean."

This happened three times, and immediately the sheet was taken back to heaven.

Thus, vegetarianism is a sin!

Does it have to be dog lard specifically? Or can it be just any old animal lard?
