Just a little word of wisdom, perhaps you should start a little bit smaller scale ;)

Start off making maps or something for established games before jumping into a full-fledged game design.

But it's always good to keep notes around for later. I wish I would've kept more notes...I had a lot of cool ideas back then that I just had no way to implement.

Speaking as a half-programmer(I know C++ but not much practical work) i would say to start ALOT smaller, designing a game is easy(well no but) but when it comes to actually implementing whats on paper you wont get anywhere because first off, I'm guessing this is a clone of GTA, GTA IV took a few year of development with a whole team. you'll find that even designing a map even 1/8 the size of the GTA map is an enormous task.

Also if this is your first attempt then what practical experience do you have with programing, design ,art; you wont get far without prior experience and even if you get to the coding stage you won't be able to create anything as great as you imagined, there have been many times when I have thought of a good idea for a game but have been shot-down due to my lack of experience.

Simply put, don't try to make a commercial quality game first-up. You will fail.

(Sorry for being a bit harsh but honestly its much harder to create a game then you think)

EDIT: Doh you said that you were designing and waiting to learn how before making it,not trying now, my mistake :)

As a fellow game designer wannabe, I wish all the power to Starrsy. If you have a game idea you think is good, go for it. You won't become Rockstar Games overnight, but you can build your way up if you start early.

The more objects I can play with the happier I am, even if they have no purpose to the main plot or theme.

My Idea Is, In This Game, If Its Not Nailed Down And Your Characters Strong Enough To Lift It, You Can. You Can Play With Anything. If I Have A Very Good Idea From A Member Of WP, I Might Try To Slip Your Name Into The Game. Lol. Seriously, I Need Ideas Of Features And Things. Such As, Will He Hit Innocents Or Not, Can You Break Into Stores At Night Splinter Cell Style, Should There Be Saints Row Style Gunplay? It's All Down To You Lot.

Personally I would start with a simple flash game that is enjoyable to play, casual, and can bring in revenue from ads. Many times game companies will ask to see examples of your work, so if you already have a flash game out there that is played and known, it will look like you actually know how to make games people want to play.

Also many hiring directors for gaming companies will find typing each word with a capital letter to be annoying and probably won't hire you, so you might want to get out of that habit.

You should definatly add weapons if the game includes gangs. Think guns like AK47 and stuff like that. Make the main character someone who is trying to get initiated into a gang. The first few missions can be the initiation process. Eventually, you should make the main character go to prison and find a way to escape. Then he has to get a new identity and leave his gang. When he leaves the gang they try to kill him so he has to defend himself against them.

You should add in a lot of cars and police chases too. Also mini missions that aren't important.

These are just suggestions. I hope some of them help. Good luck with your game.
