I think that maybe the reason many of them don't tithe is because they are unable to.

Considering that religious Americans are considerably more generous in terms of charities and volunteer work (their was an op ed in the NY Times just this sunday about it; ok that was conservatives v liberals but it indicated that the trend went along religious lines) than the average and certainly the secular, I'm not going to complain.

Yes, Christians very often fall short of what they should do in terms of charitable giving and volunteer work (and this includes me). A comparison to atheists is irrelevant because simply saying "we're doing better than they are" does not automatically mean we have fulfilled our obligations to the poor.

Straight away, I thought that they must be referring to American Christians not British. Here in England, Christianity is like a minority in UK, so there is no pressure for those with questionable integrity to join and more often then not being a Christian impresses no one, except other Christians, and possibly Muslims.

In the US, people who are not religious will often join a church, because that is a good way to make business contacts. Churches are full of realtors and car salesmen. Also, you have no chance of being elected to public office if you do not go to church.

I haven't done much volunteer work on a social level, but I do believe very much in generous giving, even when the bank account feels a little dry.

Generosity & giving take so many forms other than handing out money. Spreading your bread around, so to speak, is just the tip of the iceberg. Especially if you are rich and your donations are like chump-change as far as you're concerned.

Myself, I have no money to give but I volunteer at a faith-based community outreach centre.
