Hi everyone. Look Ive got this idea I've been working on, and I some help with it, if anyone would be kind enough.
Basically I am a wanna-be comic artist. And I have this dream - that I want to be my masterpiece. I want to make an "alternative" comic book in the style of things like Maus or American Splendor, but based on the experience of having Asperger's Syndrome.
I really think it could be original and important and get people to understand more, if it ever got made. The thing is, I really need other stories to work on other than my own life, and I dont really know what to write about now. I have AS but I'm not really a writer just an artist.
So what I would like to know is - 1) do you think this project is a good idea, and 2) Could anyone help me out? Collaborate with me please? I dont want anybody to write complete scripts or anything like that, I just want short stories or experiences that sum up what it's like to have AS.

I'd really appreciate it if anyone would help, you can e-mail me a [email protected]. thanks!

I have HFA but I think I can help you out. I also do comics but I'm usually doing political or farcical strips. If you need any help holla back!

Hey I had the same idea!

Well mine was more of an aspie character trying to do what's right in the world from the perspective of a person on the spectrum. Sort of a pseudo-super hero, without the classic super hero qualities. None the less I think a comic book about what we go through on a daily basis would help some people actually know what this "so called disorder" is. If you need help, just ask.

Maybe you can make up a story about an AS teen which explains somewhat about who we are really like. i was thinking about doing a story about this, but obviously you beat me to the punch. Can you draw Japanese Manga? if so, and if you're not too far in the artwork, then try doing it in that style. i know that i love Manga, and so do half a million other aspies (according to Dr. Attwood at a seminar i went to.) maybe you can give the boy some magic/psychic power or something as well. gotta go. show me the finished story, okay? thanks! :D

Actually, a few months ago, another WP.net member and I started working on an idea for an aspie comic, but the idea never progressed beyond a few ideas for a few strips and characters. That's awesome!

Great job. I like the drawing style and the work you put into it.

However, I think you pretty much put in every Asperger's/autistic stereotype imaginable into one strip. I think it would be a better idea to, rather, disperse every Asperger's/autistic stereotype imaginable through a bunch of strips, and only give light/casual reference in each individual strip. Asperger's should affect the protagonist's life in at least some minor way in each strip in a way aspies can relate to, but not overload it with just that kind of thing. There can be little stories, subplots, neat things.

That said, I really like what you're doing. Keep at it!

I dunno, maybe that's good for the first strip in the series -- often times characters introduce themselves in the first strip, in some web comics I've seen. It's at least good to introduce AS in the way you did.

I have to admit I ran out of ideas now.

Maybe you can help Nuttdan?

a comic book full of idioms such as "get it off your chest" ... have a picture of somebody pulling something off their chest "pull your socks up" could be another. any idiom where aspies take the phrase literally would be funny and it would be a great teaching aid for young aspies to get a grasp on these phrases. You could even show the worlds view on the phrase and the aspergers view along side.

Maybe you can come up with one character as your main character, and follow him through his everday life. I think there should be less emphasis on him as an aspie and more emphasis on him as a person who has asperger's. What I mean is, not everyone with asperger's is alike, so come up with an interesting character (he can even be based on yourself) that you can use to discuss asperger's syndrome. He can have funny little problems (like with the idioms suggested) in every strip, but try to keep it to just one or two aspie-traits per strip, so that you still have a basic story. The basic story could be very simple, like your main character going to school or hanging out with friends or family, or you could make it more fantastical. Keeping it grounded in reality would be easier for you, I think, but making it more fanciful might also be fun.

Anyway, good work! I look forward to seeing more. And for the next one you post, can you make it a bit bigger? It was kind of hard to read this one.
