Another site advocating for the cure for autism. When will these people get it through their heads that we're different not inferior. Just because I think small talk is about as useful as a chocolate teapot doesn't mean there should be less like me  .

I just sent them this message:

Hi I am Ryan McReynolds, a Precinct Delegate from Birch Run, Michigan that had ran for Presidential Elector in the 2008 Michigan GOP Convention.

I also happen to be an individual with Autism and I just found out that there is another pathetic curbie group called KOAutism, as if Autism is suppose to be the bubonic plague.

Autism is not the bubonic plague ok and if you really cared, you would be interested in helping Autistic people instead of focusing on how much you wanna *cure* Autism,

Curbies like you make me cringe

May God have mercy on your soul

Good job. I think its amusing how we get slated for poor communication, but if they'd actually learn to listen to us and accept us how we are we wouldn't be in this mess to begin with.

If all these groups were rallying for a cure for homosexually for example, another neurological difference then they'd be slammed for hate crimes seven ways from sunday. I don't see why it should be any different with autism when current research shows only impaired social skills, not intellect.

The fact that we are different scares them and it is much easier to eradicate something than to try to understand it, things will only continue to get worse until we stand up to them and their ideas.

are seeing autism as aspergers only-which is not diagnosable in those with MR,autism outside of aspergers is diagnoseable with MR and is very likely to have some level of MR or MLD.

Rather than looking at autism as autism-people need to be looking at the individual quality of life each person has,am live with a profoundly autistic adult who has a better life than anyone else here, whereas am have severe autism and have no quality of life despite having more support, specialist intervention and aids than anyone else-having severe autism/very high complex needs is not solved by any amount of adaption by others, and all the help available, there needs to be something stronger and better available for those that really do 'suffer',a better medication combo at the least.
and people need to start looking at autism differently, someone shouldnt be assumed to need or not need a 'cure' or something similar because of their said level of autism, and both anti curists, pro choicers, pro curists and curbies need to look at autism further than their own experiences through themselves or their family or friends to be able to understand why someone like that website owner and others support a cure and why others do not support a cure,no matter whether one will happen or not.

however stupid that website looks, the owner of it probably just wants the best life for his child, and he may think differently when child is an adult, dont most parents go through that stage of not eccepting their childs conditions and wanting to cure them until child grows up and the parents have gotten used to it?
maybe he could do with some advice off an unbiased expert on autism.

Hopefully people won't put much faith into a website that looks like someone vomited HTML from some mid-90's webpage generation software.

In all seriousness, this is a subject that's always going to be a hot debate. It's up to us to talk to people we meet every day in our lives and change what they think they know about autism by showing them how capable we really are. I can't tell you how many countless of my co-workers to whom I've spoken are surprised when I reveal my AS to them. They say, "I'd have never have guessed!" I take that as an opportunity open for me to share what I know from my accumulated research and personal experience on the subject. Most of them take a more positive approach, and some even are able to help family members who are scared and misinformed about the subject with their newly acquired knowledge.

The website design reminds me of similar designs that used to be displayed on geocities.

Methinks I smell a rat. All these 'non-profit' groups ask for money to find a cure. The people behind the scenes could profit from the possible millions that people send in.

There is no bloody cure. Autism is genetic. We can change our behavior, but we can't change our brain wiring.

"Cure hams, bot Autism."

(You may quote me.)

Frankly I don't care if suckers are wasting money on them, at least its not then actually being spent on the research. We should though set up a few outfits of our own, it would be a shame not to eat our pies really.

The site is pretty lame.

That, and it's a bit more pathetic than the other "OMFG We must cure autism nowz!! !!" sites. One of the kids is shown playing a Nintendo DS. "Dark world of autism" indeed. I'm sure there would be tons of parents with severly autistic children who would be PRAYING that their kid would be that high-functioning.

 Oh dear, someone needs to work on their communication skills (yes I do rather enjoy the irony). All I can say is I am terribly sorry for those two boys, if they grow up with any self esteem with that kind of maternal instinct I'll be suprised.

You know, if anyone actually bothered to do some research instead of 'oh my god my child can't be different to all the others' they would help their childrens prospects far better than searching for a cure for something that is just them.

On second thought, this farce kind of reminds me of the South Park episode where they show Russel Crowe beating up someone with cancer in an effort to "fight cancer" as a new course in life. I wonder if the site owner would approve of "boxing" the autism out. From her e-mail, she seems to believe that 11krage will meet the "same fate" as her boys' autism.

My reply to the site owner. Its all I can do, I can't force them to learn.

Hello Stacy,

It sounds like you must care for your children very much, and must be worrying about their future prospects. I'm now 21 so its not too long ago when I was in the exact same position as your boys. I received a lot of support from my parents and went from being non verbal and in my own world to attending university for a degree. I found out quite recently that a lot of people were shocked at the grades I managed to acheive because of this misconception that autism is linked to mental retardation (recently proved wrong in a scientific recent review due to extreme lack of evidence and contradictory evidence). Of course my performance never shocked me because I always knew my mind worked, overboard sometimes in fact. I just had no motivation to show it as I thought for the longest time that everyone knew I could think.

Bear in mind that everytime you try to bully me, you are bullying your children's future.

They will likely grow up and become someone like me or my more or less verbal friends. I'm sure you don't hate your children and would not want someone threatening them like you have me just because they are different from the norm.

If I had grown up with parents like you who saw me as having a plague rather than just being me. A person who's good at some things and bad at others, just like everyone else but in a more extreme way. I do not know if I would have gone through life knowing that I can acheive anything I set my mind to. Knowing I could pass exams, get a degree and a job.

If you want to help your children, then the answer is simple. Learn, listen and do not judge what you don't understand.

If you love your children and don't want them to grow up convinced they can't do anything and are 'diseased' then google search 'the autism acceptance project' or go to http://www.taaproject.com/ .

Its a site that complies scientific papers and evidence about autism to provide real evidence about what it is.

I can't make you learn. I can't shove the facts down your throat. If you hate your children for being different as I am different and so many others without voices then you'll turn your back and refuse to learn and help them. I can do nothing about that, except feel sympathy for the children whose parents chose their own pride over their child's welfare and happiness.

I wish you luck,

Sam, BSc Hons, autistic and dyspraxic

I really wish they would change the discrimination laws to cover autism more, as well as more real science and a better portrayal of autism in the media.
