And interestingly, John Best, the guy obsessed with autism being linked to vaccinations, is mentioned in the CNN article.

People will always believe what they want to believe and no amount of court decisions and facts will change the minds of people that are emotionally invested in their beliefs.

unfortunately

Well, this seems like a victory. I'm not sure how big it is, but it's there. :) Yay!

Courts are not infallible of course, but it's just that the burden of proof lies on the person making the claim of causality, so if after years and years of attempts to find the link, there has been none; so while this does not PROVE that there is no link, it doesn't matter. I cannot PROVE that unicorns do not exist. If you are making the claim, you have to go out and find the evidence. If, after searching you have no evidence (except perhaps mythical stories) I'm going to assume they don't. And any court would as well. I see this as a victory in that bad science was ruled on as bad science by the legal system.

I'm curious as to how these people have determined that their children either obtained or had more obvious examples of Autism because of vaccines... was a child injected and suddenly changed? Or was it that the vaccines were simply given at a time in their life when it became obvious that the child was autistic? Hmm...

I think it is a good thing that the court has found that vaccinations are not a direct cause of autism or autistic behaviors.

I have always been of the view that autistic behaviors are the result of genetics. The behaviors themselves are related to differences in the brain and not always something to correct.

Plus, I think that the idea that vaccinations cause autistic behaviors implies that the behaviors can be "corrected" through the use of chelation, deglutenization, etc. Autism is a part of us, and is lifelong.

I think you are correct, animeboy. It is all tangled up with the hope that if something man made can cause autism, that perhaps something man made will 'cure' it, too.

Since autism is our coindition, then logically speaking, the ruling is fair and just!

You know what, you're right! Thimerosal is not just a vaccination against childhood illnesses, it is apparently sometimes cures neurotypical syndrome!

(I say that sarcastically of course)

Keep in mind that court rulings mean nothing to scientific reality.

The vaccine scare is bull because there's no evidence for it, not because the court said so.

Quite so. But the fact that the court came to that conclusion that it's bull is very good all the same. If the court had ruled that there IS a link, that would not have made it so, but the court ruling gives some extra fuel for the argument of the side it rules in favor of.

I doubt it'll cure the existing paranoia that autism is the result of a world-wide conspiracy (no doubt secretly planned by alien terrorists from another galaxy), but at least it'll hopefully prevent future parents from falling prey to these kinds of crank ideas.

Truth be told the craze pretty much passed by me...I never heard of it before I saw it on the internet. It probably was never a big deal in my country.
