Isn't toe-walking more of an autism trait than an Aspergers trait?

Only walk on my toes when the floor is cold. Son does not walk on toes. He walks in shuffles and hops and other interesting ways.

I know plenty of toe-walker who were Not Aspergers or autistic.

I think to associate toe-walking with autism or aspergers is misguided. It would be like saying most kids diagnosed with autism have large thumbs.

It isn't misguided. It's a sign of an Autism spectrum disorder.

yep it's a sign, it can't be a coincidence that two of my aspie friends used to toe walk aswell (and one still does, with shoes on!)

It can be a sign of ASD. I used to toe walk a lot as a child, and both of my boys definetley do. My 7 yo wears out his shoes about every 3 months, because the seams in the front of the shoe come undone. However, my NT husband also toe walks so much that he has to replace his work boots fairly often due to the shape forming into a curl. When he takes them off the toes aren't sitting flat on the floor, the whole boot is curled into a u shape, which causes the seams to come undone.

I have read that many people with AS walk on their toes; however, like with many other of the AS traits, it doesn´t necessarily mean that EVERYBODY with AS is going to walk on their toes.

I think this is mostly when I do it too. Does that not count?

I always "blamed" my toe walking on the amount of ballet/gymnastics I did.

Researching about my own toe-walking is one of the things that led me to discover that there was such a thing as the Autistic Spectrum.

Just because someone walks on their toes does not mean that they are automatically on the spectrum...BUT if they walk on their toes and display a number of other traits, i reckon that could most likely up the chance that they are on the spectrum.

Toe-walking can also be caused by a mild form of cerebral palsy...or by the tendons being too short....but if the tendons are not naturally too short, and child does not grow out of it, and the cerebral palsy is ruled out by a doctor, then it is linked to forms of autism...like AS.

If I had a nickel for every time my dad corrected me, "Quit walking on the balls of your feet," I'd have a lot of nickels now.

He did me a favor, I suppose, because I learned to walk normally, and the hairspray queens finally stopped teasing me, "I can shake my hips when I walk too." :(

I didn't walk on my toes as a kid nor do I now. I did however spin myself around like a top for quite long periods of time. :drunken:
