I was diagnosed with Aspergers and Bipolar several years ago (It seems to me that those two diagnoses conflict, but it's what those doctors keep saying). I don't do a very good job of acting like normal people, but I've managed to maintain my job with the state government for several years. Most people know that I am different, but I don't think they know why because nobody ever says anything about it. My position was recently eliminated because of budget reductions, and they had to find me a new one. I start my new job at the Department of Disability Determination Services next week. The name pretty much describes what they do. When you apply for SSI these are the people who decide if you get it or not. You have to see the irony of someone like me working for these people. Part of me wonders if this may turn out to be a problem, but I guess I'll just have to wait and see. The big question is should I tell them about it or let them figure it out on their own? At my current job I never told them anything and it turned out to be a huge problem, but I really don't like talking about it. Does anyone have any experiences that I can draw on here?

I do not know in which country you live, but having mental disorders can count in some countries as a disability and can therefore provide some extra protection against dismissal or entitle to reasonable adjustments within the working environment.

My recommendation would be to inform yourself regarding the legal framework in your country/state first.

And to see what laws can benefit you.
