Does anyone ever get asked this question? For example, today I got asked if I would rather be deaf or blind and I have no idea how to answer because I can't imagine being deaf or blind. I don't understand the point of this question at all. Anyway, I answered with a "neither" and the person who asked me got annoyed and said that "neither" isn't an option. So then I said "blind because I am a musician and can play instruments without seeing" but secretly I meant neither.

I would pick deaf because seeing is better than not being able to see. I could still see everything and watch TV than having to listen to it and be on the computer than not being able to see the screen.

I would rather be deaf than be blind. I get most of my stimulation through my eyes. Actually, it's said that 80% of the things we sense are things we see.

I'd rather be deaf. At least then you can see the captions on TV and stuff.

I wondered if anyone would think that when I made the thread.

I think this is another reason for why I would choose blind over deaf. Too much visual stimulation is usually the thing that makes me meltdown, I am always staring at the floor instead of in front of me and I can't walk with my eyes closed. If I was blind all I would have to do is cover my ears if there was too much auditory stimulation.

I would say "Your hypothetical question has zero relevance to my life and does not deserve any other answer. Why are you asking such dumb questions anyways?"

You guys say that.... I'm half deaf and i can't do anything related to violent sports (shock to the head or the other ear could make me go 100% deaf), i have to watch myself when going near the water (again, water skiing is fast, shock to the head when falling could make me deaf, also, water pressure could have an impact). And obviously i'm more sensitive near loud places (i can't go into bars, discotheques, or whatever...). All in all, i've read somewhere that people that are deaf or even half deaf like myself or more socially withdrawn.... They'd rather learn the language of the mute-deaf rather than try to communicate with others. (not yet my case, thankfully)

Also be glad you have your sight. You will still get over-stimulated without it, not to mention the stress of not always knowing everything going on around you and the people touching you out of nowhere. You would often be judged based on some preconceived stereotype that you're musically talented, and you're either a genius or ret*d. You would be glad if everyone treated you like a human being. You would find it very hard to get a job at your level, and you would be expected to like hanging around mostly other blind people, many of whom have very negative attitudes.

I thought you were asking if I want to be a boy or a girl, also... hehe

anyway, to answer the initial question, I would prefer to be deaf ONLY IF I was all of my life. That way I wouldn't know what I was missing. Otherwise, neither.

I get asked those sort of questions sometimes. I don't have any difficulty with answering them.

(I'd rather be blind. I'm a musician, I need my hearing.)

What's wrong with ASL and the Deaf community? I dunno if you've ever seen a few ASL speakers get together, but it's every bit as social as neurotypical chatter, only quieter. Deaf = antisocial? I seriously doubt it.

I like to say "no thank you" to this sort of question, as though the person is making me an offer.

I'd rather be deaf. Being blind means that you have to rely on people. I hate having to rely on people.

I'd rather be deaf, but like someone already said, only if it was my whole life. Else I would be driven crazy by songs playing in my head that I know I will never hear again.

My brother and I play that game. We call it "You Have To Choose One". We take turns asking each other horrible questions, and whatever we're asked, we have to pick the lesser of two evils. For example, a classic question would be, "if you were forced to kill either mommy or daddy, who would it be?"
