Wanted to recommend this film to everyone. This film portrays a character with Aspergers. It is the first stop-motion claymation feature film in Australia. It's by the makers of Harvey Krumpet. Look up Harvey Krumpet on YouTube if you want an idea of the type of film you are in for.

Here is the website where you can view the trailer - http://www.maryandmax.com/

And here is the synopsis of the movie -

Quote:
Mary and Max is a claymated feature film from the Australian creators of the Academy Award winning
short animation Harvie Krumpet. It is a simple tale of pen-friendship between two very different people;
Mary Dinkle, a chubby lonely eight year old girl living in the suburbs of Melbourne,
and Max Horovitz, a 44 year old, severely obese, Jewish man with Asperger's Syndrome
living in the chaos of New York. Spanning twenty years and two continents, Mary and Max's friendship
survives much more than the average diet of life's ups and downs. Like Harvie Krumpet, Mary and Max
is innocent but not naive, as it takes on a journey that explores friendship, autism, taxidermy, psychiatry,
alcoholism, where babies come from, obesity, kleptomania, sexual difference, trust, copulating dogs,
religious difference, agoraphobia and much much more.

This is an Australian made film, made in Melbourne and opens around Australia on April 9th 2009.

Here are the screening details - http://www.maryandmax.com/news/article/ ... australia/

Note: - this film will only be released in the smaller cinemas, like Dendy.

It will also be released internationally at some point in the future. So keep an eye out.

Ok, so there has been a complete lack of interest on this thread, but I just saw the film and I really really really suggest everyone should watch it.

I think it paints a pretty realistic picture of a man with Aspergers Syndrome. Also, it is not a negative picture. The man in the film does not want to be cured. I was at a Q & A session with the writer and the Aspie man in the film is actually based off his real life pen pal. He also ran the script by Tony Attwood to make sure it was a realistic portrayal.

The film has some sad moments and deals with some pretty heavy topics like depression, attempted suicide, bullying and loneliness. But all in all it is made to have a comedic element so you don't walk out of it feeling all teary and terrible. I laughed quite a few times through it.

Another thing is that the film will be released internationally. I just found that out.

The film starts screening on April 9th and the writer and producers asked that people try to get as many of their friends to see it in the opening week as possible to make sure it actually stays in the cinemas.

I think this is a really good film to shed light on Aspergers Syndrome, but also people who are ostracized like the little girl is. Basically people who are excluded for being different. The message that the Aspie man gives is to learn to be happy with who you are, your flaws included.

This film is certainly superior to the crap produced today just by watching this trailer, especially the CGI ones. I don't see why everyone has to go 3d computer graphics these days. Why can't someone just make a claymation or even a cartoon movie? I say that to myself everyday as if there's no hope for the traditional ways anymore, but when I saw this trailer I was relieved.

I'll go see it when it come into theatres internationally. I've been waiting to see a movie where someone is an Aspie, and I think this movie portrays Aspies perfectly. I thought the plot was stupid at first, but then I saw it again and it does have a point. Kinda dark, but it's funny at the same time (i.e. air conditioner falling on the mime.) The little girl portrays us too, seeing we're the ones who are ostracize by society. It's good to see movies that actually have meaning than those stupid comedy movies that really have no point other than to make money (i.e. Superbad and that new movie coming this month about an adult amusement park.) I mean seriously, do those comedy movies even have a reason for being there other than to entertain?

Anyways, like you, I hope many people come to see this movie and finally accept Aspies for who they are. I hope they finally accept that Aspies don't want to be cured. I hope so, because, sad to say, many people these days, especially children, see cartoon movies and claymation inferior to live-action and 3d CGI. In fact, most cartoon and claymation movies are better than the live-action and CGI. No wait, they're way superior to those types these days. Last claymation movie I saw was Chicken Run, and that movie is superior to the garbage today! Not saying Chicken Run is bad; it was one of the best movies I've ever seen.

Overall, I will see it. It has meaning, a dark yet funny tone, and different from the crap produced today.

Sorry, not sure when it will be released internationally. I don't even know how you would find out.

Batz - I really liked Chicken Run too. Adam Elliot, the writer and director said that this film has no CGI at all. All the rain and water in the film is sex lube. Basically everything was made. Supposedly, some claymation films sometimes use CGI as well.

This movie is really one of those that stands out on its own. The only other film that is anything like it is their short film, Harvie Krumpet. As soon as it is released on DVD I'm adding it to my collection. I already own Harvie Krumpet. I don't tend to buy movies much, but these are just really special.

I've seen it. I had very mixed feelings about it. Parts of it were very cute and funny, but there was a scene that reminded me so much of an extremely traumatic experience in my life that I had a crying fit that lasted through to the end of the film. So, while I did enjoy it, I don't think I'll watch it again, because it was just so unpleasant to have to relive that without warning--and alone, no less! I should have had someone to snuggle with when I watched it, heh.

Amazing movie, I loved it.

Spoiler:
I didn't understand why Max would be so upset at Mary for writing a book on Asperger's. In real life, a researcher would have had to ask for permission to use him as a subject, and she probably would have used a fake name. The idea that she could cure Aspergers seems so abstract that I don't see why that would upset anyone, it's not like she actually developed a cure. The only thing I would object to is loosing my privacy. I wonder how it happened in real life (it's apparently based on a true story).

I fully understand why he was upset. The very idea that autism/Asperger's is something that would need to be 'cured' is insulting. It's not a disease, an affliction, or a condition. It's just a different way to be, and I for one am happy being this way. You wouldn't cure creativity, or intelligence, or freckles, so why look for a cure for autism?

It would be an amazing scientific accomplishment for one thing. Also, I cannot imagine that any adult would be cured against their will. Also, Max's autism apparently caused him multiple problems, including an early death. Also, I am sure some people on this forum would volunteer for a cure if there was one, like those people who talk about suicide.

It is a condition of some sort, it's just not a disease.
