If you could change just one of your autistic traits, which one would it be?

I would like to be able to settle down after I have been out mixing with people instead of fidgetting and pacing due to being overstimulated and stressed out. It just wastes so much time when I could be settled in a chair reading in a relaxed state.

The only good thing is that I can sometimes use the excess energy to tidy up or something, but its in a stressed state.

lol, its a biggie but I would get rid of my inability to read others intentions.

Im so sick of ruminating for hours trying to work out what made people act in a certain way, trying to work out with logic what people are up to.

It would be so nice to intuitively know if someone liked you or hated you and to know what to do about it to change their impression of you, wow, imagine that 8O

I would totally drop my "lack of social and emotional reciprocity." I would really like to be closer to the people in my life.

Seeing this thread after yet another long night where my mind and body's sleeping rhythms are totally out of sync, I'm tempted to vote in that direction. However, upon reflection I would have to say that I'd vote alexithymia off of my island if I could. When you cannot recognise your own feelings, and cannot describe them on the rare occasions you do recognise them, it becomes exceedingly difficult to establish any kind of a meaningful relationship beyond the superficial. It would be nice even for a day to know what it is like to understand one's own emotions.

I've learned to kinda sorta get on with the rest of the autistic package.

I'd like to be able to read body language and to display it accurately and intuitively.

I have a different approach. I am indifferent to the intent of others. I only care about overt acts. There is really no perfect way to know the intention of another, in any case. So why bother to care?

Write it down first then speak it aloud.

The anxiety.

But then, without the constant drone of such, perhaps I'd feel lonely (not really, I'd just feel more empty)?

The anxiety.

I'd love to be able to multi-task - specifically, be able to carry on multliple conversations or talk while doing something else. For me, conversations require all my senses and I can't do anything else while I'm talking/listening.

Or to be able to get through airports and other hustly-bustly places without losing or forgetting something.

For me, just the inability to stand overly-manipulative people over long periods of time. All the other strengths and weaknesses I've been able to manage relatively well.

I thought everyone had this trait. (At least, I've never met an NT who doesn't mind being around manipulative people.) :?
