I read a post where someone said that Aspies should not have children. I don't have children and don't want to have children, but I was struck by the thought. Why not? And then I realized... ZOMG!! ! what would happen without aspies? Where would we be. Google would have to shut down. And probably NASA. Who would invent the world? Who would be the champions of neuro-diversity?

We would be lost, as a species, as all the middle-management types danced and socialized our world into oblivion, with no one around who knew how to hack the espresso machine into a disco smoke machine and get double lattes at the right temperature. Anyone who has studied environmental issues knows about the necessity of genetic diversity, and the dangers of the mono-crop. Well NTs are a monocrop. Remember, Aspies are not broken. Society is broken. Society has LOST its ability to be inclusive and accommodating of anyone who is not NT. As the world has become institutionalized over the past few centuries, the world has shrunk, and the important niches we filled in have been gradually enclosed and locked away. Now, the expectations for neuro-conformity are the rule. I think it is our job to widen social expectations and understandings, and increase opportunities for diverse expressions of what it means to participate actively in society... and we're the people to do it.

Take any list of historical figures who are aspergian, and you'll see what the gene pool needs... US.

Hear hear. To flat-out state that a certain type of person should not have children is a Nazi-type mentality that's more common than people think, and moreoever it's unfair. Why not let Aspies have children if they want to? I agree that it's society which is broken but only the people on the 'outside' are able to see just how much.

Neurodiversity for the win!

Well, it's fact that people with milder forms of Autism are the ones who pass on the more severe types (see: my dad to me). Not that the more severe types are any less human, of course, but one has to take this into account when one has children, as you have an obligation to the child if he or she can't fit into society like his or her more "normal" brethren. But then, this should be how it goes with any child, but people tend not to think of these things.

We can't stop having children just because they might be different. Well, I can, because I don't want children, but otherwise. :)

I agree with you 100%, complicitytheory! :)

I don't want to have kids anyway. But aspies who want to, should.

yeah, like my parents are NTs and look what they had!
And two aspies can have an NT

I want kids when I'm older. Even now when I see pregnant women or child birth on TV I get all jealous of them, but I wouldn't have kids now though I'm still a baby myself

My BF and I decided to not have children because we are unable to support them. I believe, since we are both AS, that we would have a child on the spectrum. Since taking care of ourselves is a full-time job, it would not be fair to the child... just like it wasn't fair to me that my AS mother could not take care of me emotionally.

Aspies should continue in our society. BF and I would never want a child to suffer as much as we have though.

The little secret that 1st world society likes to ignore: The world is overpopulated by Humans, and it is still growing. That is ENOUGH reason for a person who has enough intelligence to ask this question to not do it. let alone other reasons.

At a time when divorce rates are through the roof... why not just help friends and family raise THEIR KIDS. Be the best uncle or aunt you can be... Hell, it's like the fun of being a grandparent. You get the spoil the kids with your intelligence and knowledge, but none of the real problems ;)

Seriously, you can rent instead of own. Love is love to give, even to other family or strangers.

Agreed. But that's a different issue. Should we reduce population because there are too many kids? Yes. Should aspies not have kids because their aspies? No.

Fewer children, and more genetic diversity, plz. :)

I'm a hypocrite on this one.

I completely believe that AS'ers should have kids if they wish to, and can look after them.

On the other hand, I don't want a kid who is like my brother, autistic to the point that he has no language at all (no signals, and he can't write or type either) and no self sufficiency unless you want to count urinating on things by himself.

Well, I for one am open to the possibility of having kids on the spectrum. Me being against things like prenatal screening and such, it would be hypocritical of me to NOT be willing to have my own autistic children.

I would suspect for most of us 'The chance would be a fine thing'.
