Someone told me they lost their purse...What did I say? "Where did you lose it?" to which the person responded "If I knew that it wouldn't be lost." I feel so embarrassed.

I don't think you should be embarrassed for what you said. "Where" can mean "in this hemisphere", "in my house", "somewhere between home and work", so it is probable that she was expressing her frustration, not turning on you. You expressed interest in her situation, which is one of those social niceties people seem to put a lot of stress on. If she was actually turning on you, that was rude on her part, so you shouldn't feel bad.
