folks, quick question,
I am gay, arlight, and if I find the man of my dreams, will the world end if I marry him and have hawt buttsecks on our wedding nite? I think not! srsly, those who are married can attest to how bad it is, so if you hate gays, why wouldn't you be begging them to marry?

I think we should just abolish any form of marriage licensing. Why should 2 people, gay, straight or otherwise have to go to the government to get permission to get married? If marriage truly is a contract between 2 people and god, then why do all the religious people want to stick government into the equation? Plus it would have the added benefit of removing this stupid discussion from the political sphere so we can start talking about things that actually matter.

Government is involved because of taxation consequences, property rights, inheritance, hospital visitation rights, care of children, etc.

Agreed... heck, I'm in favor of allowing familial cooperatives for other, larger, non-traditional arrangements. If we're going to give rights to corporations that exceed those of individuals, then it only seems fair to allow those who wish to 'incorporate' to do so.

Excellent!
Just a friendly reminder though, don't forget about the B and the T when you say you support LGBQT rights.

Glencannon's point still stands though, because the taxation issues could be minimized significantly if the government so chose. The property right issue, the inheritance issue, the hospital visitation rights, the care of children, etc, all seem like they could be dealt with through some general contractarian set up.

I think marriage is valid because if you don't have any heirs, the courts wouldn't know who to award your estate to. If you're married sans children or any next of kin (brothers, sisters or the like), your spouse becomes your executor. It's all legalese to cover everyone's butt. Someone can't just come in off the street, find a dead body in a home and claim that they were their spouse and claim all their worldly possessions, their estate and their fortune. They really had to have been married to that person.

If that were the case, people would be lining up outside the doors some of the finest mansions across the country waiting for the occupant to expire.

I don't see how it's any of my damn business who marries who.

As far as the legal issue goes, either allow everyone marriages, or get the government out of marriage entirely (it's a religious institution, or so some people claim) and let the government issue civil unions to everyone, straight or gay.

I agree with this to a certain extent. I don’t have any problems with homosexual marriages, but I would have a problem with someone saying it violates his religious rights if the government wouldn’t let him marry multiple under aged girls for example. Government has to draw the line somewhere when it comes to marriage.

I find the idea of 'marriage' quite absurd, but under current cirumstances I support everyone's right to marry, and disagree with that it's a religious institution. I'm speaking as an asexual, BTW.
