now that the snow's gone and the sun is out you've got no excuse not to get out there and do something to stay healthy. what are you all doing?

I started rowing this monday (sort of, i didn't get on the water until tuesday) and i've got two practices a day, i'm usually rowing for 3-4hrs a day. I'll be starting work on monday on the experimental farm (they test agricultural methods, etc. there, no livestock) in the city doing grounds keeping so it won't be anything excruciating but i'll be on my feet most of the day walking around, maybe doing light to moderate lifting, so i'll be active. I've also got to bike to rowing and work. I calculated my route and i'll be doing about 30km of biking a day. I'm also planning on doing some long distance bike rides this summer. my parents' cottage is about 106km (66mi) from my place and i'd like to bike up there for a few weekends. I'd also like to bike to brockville (110km/70mi) at least once to visit some high school friends.

I've also got some friends in or around winnipeg so i'd like to make the trek out there some day. it's about 2150km (1350mi) and i figure i can bike 200-300km a day so it shouldn't take much more than a week to do it. I've got about two weeks off at the end of the summer before school starts but i might not be able to afford a plane ticket back, so that's the main thing that would hold me back

Isn't it important to stay "fit" all year 'round and not just in the summer months?

yeah but we all know not many people do. it's hard to motivate yourself to train/exercise as frequently or as intensely during the winter. plus there are many more possibilities for exercise in the summer. also most students don't have school in the summer so they can't use school as an excuse not to be active.

My reason for not exercising this past winter is that I'm wearing sandals all the time, trying to clear up a horrible toenail fungus. Once I can wear shoes again, I'll be out there any day as long as it's dry and not windy. Back when I was wearing shoes, I'd be out there throughout the winter. I liked it quite a bit, as I'd have the entire place all to myself.

So yeah, I've been out skating regularly for about 3 weeks now. Just yesterday, I figured out a way to tighten my technique, converting what was previously wasted into more speed. More speed = more fun. It's great to be back out.

I will just keep tearing it up in the gym and on the treadmill. I brought my bench press max up to 425lbs per one rep today and I also did 50 strict pullups in one effort for the first time since 2004. I definitely have more impetus to work out in the summer what with shorts and short sleeve shirts, even though I don't go to the pool.

8O Holy moley bourito, you must be fit.

I'm a weekend rower, and bushwalker, and I try to get to a gym once a week. It's autumn here so those early morning creaks might start to be a problem soon....

I'll be going hiking, biking, weight lifting, maybe some jogging if I'm in the mood. I'm going to be working my ass off down to 150 lbs.

haha i will be. i'm by no means out of shape, i'm in good physical condition but my winter training was seriously lacking this year, mainly due to depression and other things that killed my motivation, so i'm not as fit as i'd like to be and i've got to lose about 10lbs by july. i don't have a sixpack anymore, last summer was the first time i ever had one, but i should be in tip top shape by the end of the summer.

Woah some of you guys are really fit. I only recently started to exercise more so I'm gonna build up on it. I'm gonna go swimming a lot more once my exams are finished and I'll probably try a kickboxing class or something like that as well. At the moment I work out around 3 times a week.

I workout/ride 6 days a week, with one day of total relaxation. It really depends on what days I race, but pretty much my week consists of Tuesday usually about 20 miles by myself then team ride around 35 mile, Wednesday I go for a long ride, Thursday I usually ride around 50 miles, Friday is my rest day, races on the weekend, Monday is a easy 30 miles. I usually try to go for a hike one day a week, usually places I stop at while traveling. I also try to get a day or two of upper body workout a week.
unfortunately I seem not to be as fit as I was last season at this time

here here

well i was hoping i wouldn't have to watch my diet but i think i will. I haven't lost any weight this week despite going to practice 10 times (2 were weight sessions, 1 erg workout, the rest were on the water). I have been eating a lot, mainly because i've been hungry ALL THE TIME since i started, so i'm just going to make a few changes to my diet, not too much though because i'll be starting work tomorrow, meaning more activity during the day and 30km of biking, so i don't want to starve myself like i accidentally did last summer.

Yes, but routines can change in the summer. Particularly if you, like me, will be home from college until late August. That means I'm away from Coach (not a bad thing, really), my team and a well-equip (free!) gym.

I have yet to hammer out my summer routine, because I don't know my work hours yet and that changes everything. I will be helping out my old high school team (I have trouble calling it "coaching") three days a week though, so that will be something. Oh, and as always, physical therapy. Same routine, same organization, just a different location. I don't have a fitness goal as much as I have a lack-of-new-injury goal.

That's a very good goal which i also share, and have already somewhat failed lol. I'd like to avoid injuries serious enough to make me miss practices since it's hard to completely avoid repetitive strain injuries. last summer i developed trigger finger (similar to tendinitis) in 6 or 7 fingers and had to miss a week or two of practice. this year i've mildly injured a tendon in my right leg, where my hamstring attaches to the bone, but that has pretty much cleared up, and the trigger finger came back for a day, but stretches, exercises, and anti-inflammatory medication cleared that up in less than a day.

It's ironic really, doing sports to stay fit and active, but it's sports (or the discipline and drive they inspire) that lead to injury.

I have bad knees. Basically I fenced (fencing like NCAA, like the Olympics, not like Renaissance Faire) on a minor injury, refusing to take any days off. It snowballed, and now I wear knee braces and have a standing prescription for anti-inflammatories. I have to be careful no to overdo it at the gym, or do too many days in a row. It sucks, but I can swim as much as I want.

Does anyone else find indoor pools depressing? Beaches are often loud and trash-covered, but swimming in a cement hole in a hazy room just gets to me.

So, to get back on topic--I'll be hitting the water this summer.
