Question. Do you sing along with friends to songs? I have noticed when I'm in the car with some friend, they would try to make me sing along with them that current song, probably some burned out classic track. I never follow that game, and If I sing I do it in a bored kind of way. I see people actually do it constantly, singing their favorite songs together, it kind of brings them together, another reason why I end up not having a real friend.

Also, what is the normal behavior of two friends in the car alone? I tend to be quiet and very focused on the music. Always looking the front.

This differs from person to person. Long story short, there is no universal right answer. Generally, though, the driver sets the cue. His car, his rules. However, he may feel the same way you do, and be nervous about doing that in front of his friends even if he'll rock out when he's the only one in the car. I know I'm that way. Don't be afraid to join in the fun.

Is this normal? I can see this being normal. Music effectively serves as a sort of social glue - not a way for people to meet other people, but a way for existing friendships to become more and more stable. However, none of my friends...

...at least those with whom I've been in a car (that's all three of you!)...

...none of them share my music taste. It happens that two of my friends back in North Carolina are mutual friends themselves and share the love of Queen, the Killers Panic At the Disco, etc..., and they'll sing along while I'm baffled that they can remember all those lyrics. Certainly for them it's a social glue.

It alternates between intense discourse and quiet periods. I've found that you can have very good conversations while in the car. But then I'm not the driver. In terms of music, I wouldn't know exactly since I don't have my friends' music taste. I've actually tried to learn the Panic! at the Disco lyrics so I could sing along with my friends but that's more memorization than I've done in the past six years of school.

But in the end, social behavior in a car with two people is indeed a bit more subdued than with three people. Just because you don't have a third person you could use as a foil, stooge, etc... in an argument, so things are a bit less heated.

I always sing along, friends or no friends. I'm not a very good singer, but I have good self esteem and a great love for music.

I like to sing when I'm alone in the car, but only do it with friends if they initiate it and the music is really loud. I don't know how my voice sounds, but so far, I'm afraid to record and listen to it just in case it's really awful :(

I won't ever sing in a car with others unless I'm drunk.

Also I just recorded my voice for the first time in the last couple days, it sounded exactly how I expected it would; that is to say, I can sing in key well enough that it's not horrendous, but my actual voice is not great.

Our car stereo is broken.
I frequently play the ukulele in the car.

On a recent road trip, my partner had me sing every lyric to every musical i knew a-capella

Sometimes others sing along...

I've got some weird phobia about singing in front of people. I used to sing in choruses and such, and was pretty good at it back in the day. But I feel awkward singing in front of others now. Not that I've gotten bad or anything. I practice regularly when I'm alone.

I kind of consider it in the same category as crying in front of people. It makes me feel naked.

I always sing if there's a song worth singing, with or without company. It's just something I enjoy doing, and the presence of others doesn't bother me in this case.

The "singing in the car" thing works pretty strangely for me. For some reason, when I am alone in the car I have a voice that puts Pavarotti to shame in both quality and volume, and I use it frequently to many different types of music.

Yet, throw another person or two in the car and I suddenly become a tone-deaf, meek-voiced troglodyte. Therefore, when in the presence of others in the car, I do not sing regardless of what the others are doing.

This also applies to the shower, but as yet in my life I don't know what would happen if someone joined me there.
