...what item(s), if any, would you want to grab before evacuating?

I had a dream the other day that involved my house bursting into flames. Before I left the burning building I took my digital SLR camera (plus lenses) and Sheepy (a cuddly toy lamb I've had since I was tiny) with me.

I would try to save the guinea pigs, although unfortunately I don't think they would survive the shock/fumes/heat. Then again, they live in a sheltered outside so would probably have a better chance of survival out there than if I tried to take them with me.

Now that I think about it, I probably wouldn't have time to take any of those things with me without seriously risking my life, or getting dragged out of the house by my mum.
I doubt I'd be level-headed enough in such a situation to think about possessions anyway.

(This is all assuming that my family are safe outside and that the fire wasn't serious at that point.)

If my house were on fire, I'd probably be too panicked to remember to take something. Then, I'd get outside and freeze because I would have no jacket and it would probably be raining.

However, assuming I was able to remember I would take my granddad's harmonica and his pocket watch, and also my false tooth (and hopefully a jacket).

I thought of this more as a question of assuming you took something, what would it be? Obviously it isn't advisable to take anything in a fire, because life is more important.

This is assuming all your family members were safe and you had time to grab an object that meant something to you. Obviously in a real situation nothing would matter besides family etc. but what I'm really asking is what objects would you most miss if they were destroyed in a fire?

I was just curious, really. :|

I would grab our family's prescription medicines. I have high blood pressure and I feel ill without my medicine.

In addition to my family.... my Portable DVD Player, but it would probably be too unsafe to do that.

passport and wallet.

If there'd be time left: the crochet flower girl from my deceased aunt, a stack of photo albums and my computer (since it's full of pictures as well).

My dog. The rest are just posessions.

I suppose if I have more time, some legal documents would be a good idea, too. There are pics and stuff on my comp... but I doubt I could unhook everything and take the tower in time
I really should back it up onto my external hard drive :chin:

i'd fling the cat outside the window, then i'd drag my computer out, or die trying.

were we supposed to treat pets as something to take with you?...

If so, the guinea pig'd be the first to be saved. Then the wallet/passport, which'd be easy 'cause I always keep them near me.

My pets. My birds are in an aviary attached to the side of the house so I would have to quickly put them in their smaller cage. My cats are usually outside & would probably escape the fire before I did, so I would only check quickly if I could see them inside & if I couldn't, I would get out & hope they were out too. My dog...well considering that he weighs more than me it I really hope I wouldn't have to carry him. With our 300+ litre fish tank I don't think there's any chance of getting them out, so hopefully there's never a fire.

To be honest, there's none of my material possessions that are important enough to me for me to risk my life to save.

Right now I could fit most of my stuff in a duffle bag, including my wallet and important docs. When I was living alone I had a bug out bag in my closet and all my important documents (Checkbook, birth certificate, SSN card, a couple of other things) in the bottom of my desk drawer so I could empty the drawer and run.
